Hickory Street Market (1905)
Subject
Streets -- Buildings
Description
Hickory Street market about 1905. Brick paved street. Above what is now Snuffy's (2004) Restaurant (far right) was a Turkish bath. Oysters were available on the ground floor at Madden's. The building space on the left of the three-story building was a liquor store. The cupola of the City Hall is visible at the left of center. The old city hall stood on the site of a small Blair Corporation employee parking lot at Third Avenue and Hickory Street. All the structures between city hall and the three-story Odd Fellows building were destroyed by fire in 1933, occupied at the time by the New Process Company (now, 2004, Blair Corporation). NPC rebuilt on the site; the main offices occupy this space.
