Description
This folder contains correspondence from and directed to Philip Powell Calvert who specialized in Odonata, an order of insects that includes dragonflies and damselflies. Calvert held numerous positions within the American Entomological Society (AES), serving as president from 1900-1915 and as editor of the journal, Entomological News, from 1911-1943. The majority of his correspondence is centered around his work as editor of Entomological News, with details surrounding the publications of other entomologists’ papers, subscription policies, and potential manuscripts to include in each journal issue.
Calvert traveled extensively throughout his career. During the late 1890s, he traveled across Europe, visiting multiple museums that held entomology collections and meeting fellow entomologists. In 1909, he and his wife, Amelia Smith Calvert, traveled to Costa Rica, where he collected Odonata that were sent back to the AES.
In 1939, Calvert received a diploma of Honorary Membership in the AES and was bestowed the title of Editor Emeritus in 1943. Calvert’s final correspondence in the folder is a 1948 tribute to longtime colleague and fellow editor, Ezra Townsend Cresson, Jr., who died that year.
