Description
This folder contains correspondence from Charles Henry Fernald. Fernald was professor of zoology at Massachusetts Agricultural College, known today as the University of Massachusetts Amherst. His correspondence is centered around his study of microlepidoptera, commonly known as micromoths, with Pyralidae and Pterophoridae being frequently mentioned. An 1892 letter to Henry Skinner of the American Entomological Society (AES) discussed the eradication efforts of the invasive gypsy moth.
Much of Fernald's correspondence discusses his various publications on different microlepidoptera along with writing descriptions of specimens sent to him by the AES. For example, in 1894, the AES sent several Greenland insects to him for identification, and Fernald identified 32 examples of a moth named Pyrausta torvalis. Fernald, C. H. (Charles Henry) (28) 1882-1904.
