This folder holds correspondence from multiple individuals. In an 1897 letter, Alexander Craw, who was the quarantine officer and entomologist for the California State Board of Horticulture, reached out to the Academy of Natural Sciences for the name, physical specimen, and details of an invasive insect species that arrived in Philadelphia via a British ship that sailed from South America.
The folder also contains correspondence from and directed to both Ezra Townsend Cresson and his son, Ezra Townsend Cresson, Jr. Cresson Sr. served as treasurer of the American Entomological Society (AES) and his correspondence provides details on payments of membership fees and exchanges of collections and publications. He submitted his resignation as treasurer in 1924. Cresson Jr. served in multiple positions such as vice president, librarian, corresponding secretary, editor of transactions and memoirs, and associate editor of Entomological News. In 1945, following his physician’s advice, he asked to not be nominated for any of the officer roles in the AES along with resigning as editor but was willing to continue cataloging the society’s books. That same year, the society sent him a letter of thanks and appreciation for his long service. In 1947, Cresson Jr. submitted his resignation from his remaining positions due to failing health.
Norman Criddle’s correspondence discusses his collection of various insects that he collected in Manitoba, Canada. He sent boxes of Diptera, Hymenoptera, and Lepidoptera to the AES for identification. Between 1908-1910, he visited Ottawa to meet with other entomologists and viewed several of their collections.
