Description
This folder contains correspondence from multiple individuals. F.C. Biggs was a major who served in the United States Army Corps of Engineers. His 1914 correspondence involved discussions with the American Entomological Society (AES) on the prospect of hiring an entomologist, who would collect a variety of insects to showcase in an exhibit of the Panama Canal during the Panama-Pacific Exposition. In 1912, Louise E. Billouin wrote to the AES with a request to begin negotiations on the sale of various insects found on the island of Tobago. According to an undated letter, the Biologia Centrali-Americana collection mailed a series of 1140 species, 3529 specimens of Coleoptera to the Academy of Natural Sciences. In 1942, A.F.H. Blaauw, the secretary of the Netherland Committee for Scientific Documentation, sent a letter to the AES requesting assistance in reestablishing communications between Dutch scientists and scientists from other allied countries as soon as the Second World War came to an end.
Henry Bird was an entomologist whose correspondence details his work with Noctuidae, commonly known as owlet moths. His correspondence spans from 1891-1941, and they largely discuss exchanges of Noctuidae specimens between him and the AES. In 1941, Bird was recognized by the AES for his long-term support of the journal, Entomological News, and was exempted from its annual subscriptions. C.V. Blackburn was a member of the Boston Natural History Society and the Cambridge Entomological Club. His correspondence, spanning from 1900-1923, details his work in describing and naming various butterfly species, particularly in the Hesperiidae and Lycaenidae families.
