Description
This folder contains correspondence from multiple individuals. Karl R. Coolidge’s correspondence largely discusses his work with Lepidoptera, specifically butterflies. Coolidge collected a variety of butterflies, including but not limited to Thecla, brettoides, skippers, and Melitaea. Many of his specimens were collected throughout California, with Mint Canyon and Indian Wells, Colorado Desert mentioned.
Daniel William Coquillett’s correspondence is centered around his work with Diptera. One family of flies mentioned is Trypetidae, known formally today as Tephritidae and commonly as fruit flies. In 1901, Coquillett sent a publication about a new species of Diptera that he described as “Chironomus erythrocampus”, which was a European species introduced to the United States, to the American Entomological Society (AES).
Ernest N. Cory’s correspondence as secretary of the American Association of Economic Entomologists discusses several meetings conducted by the association to determine possible actions to deepen cooperation between all entomological branches and societies in the United States. In a 1935 letter to the AES, the association discussed the possibility of forming a federation of entomological societies and began a revision of its constitution to reflect that possibility before sending the revised draft to other entomological societies.
