Description
Glass lantern slide of an illustration of the proposed Falls Bridge over the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. The image is a bird's eye view of the bridge and surrounding area and shows the proposed second level of the bridge which was never built. The image caption reads: "View of Proposed Falls Bridge over Schuylkill River. Department of Public Works. Bureau of Surveys. Dec. 1894. James H. Windrim, Director, Dept Public Works. George S. Webster, Chief Engineer." A small map is inset in the top right corner with the caption: “View of Proposed Falls Bridge and Approaches.” The Falls Bridge, built in 1894-95, is a steel Pratt truss bridge with stone masonry abutments and piers. It was designed as a double-deck bridge but the second level was never built. It still stands today connecting Kelly Drive and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. Used to illustrate the course "Civil Engineering Structures" which was taught between 1893-1950 at the Wagner Free Institute of Science, Philadelphia, Pa.
