Description
Glass lantern slide of a black and white photograph of the Columbia Railroad Bridge over the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. The photographs looks south from the east bank of the river showing almost the full span of the bridge across the river. On the right of the image, behind the leaves of the tree, the smoke stacks of Belmont Pumping Station are visible. The Columbia Railroad Bridge is a concrete arch bridge over the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia consisting of eight concrete arch spans supporting four railroad tracks and a pedestrian walk. It was designed by Samuel Tobias Wagner who was chief engineer of the Philadelphia & Reading Railway at the time and is the third railroad bridge at this location. It opened in 1920 with two tracks, and the other two were added in 1921. Used to illustrate the course "Civil Engineering Structures" which was taught between 1893-1950 at the Wagner Free Institute of Science, Philadelphia, Pa.
