Description
Glass lantern slide of a black and white photograph of the Chestnut Street Bridge across the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. The image highlights the beautiful details of the bridge and the cast iron ribs of the arches. Large blocks of stone are piled around the bridge. Designed by Strickland Kneass and built between 1861-1866, the Chestnut Street bridge consisted of two gothic-style arched spans of cast iron, two granite abutments, and a central granite pier. The bridge was demolished in 1958. Used to illustrate the course "Civil Engineering Structures" which was taught between 1893-1950 at the Wagner Free Institute of Science, Philadelphia, Pa.
