A TALE FOE FICKIE lOVEKS,
"Emily, Emity, my darling, is it true ?— Say it again—only once again Kmily I"
Emily lifted np Ler f.ice, with a soft trem¬ ulons smile, as her ha2el eyes answered the ardent questioning of bar lover's glance.
"Yes, yea, Edward," slie replied, and the words wer« swewl tn his eager ear.
"Again, and again, Emily ? I conld hear you say it forever, my love!" said the youug man.

Underlhe trees, in the garden of the old parnonage.they walked together in tbe sunset, after tbis sweet confession—walking side by Bide, Edward holding Emily's hand, and talk¬ ing tenderly to her as tbey went, witb his warm heart beaming in his handsome face, aud Emily listening silently, with a happiness wbose very silence manifests its depth; aad the ["unsank lower, and tbe shadows grew longer, as the pleasant momenta slipped away-golden moments to Edward and Emily; and, finally, as the twilight began to gather) ihey heard lbe voice of Emily's father, calling her from his study.

Tbey, in their charity for others, could not conceive that she had an idea of evil regarding them. But Helena Wyndham laughed at their charity. She did not scrnpl't to abuse it when it served ber purpose so to do; and she glided in, in her elegant attire, with her soft yet brilliant beauty, her captivating manner, her keen, delicate, light flashing wit, aud placed herself in bewildering, dazzling con¬ trast to her fair, simple, nuworldly,y6t noble cousin Emily. It was uot the first time Edward had seen her; but he had never spoken to her before this evening. Helena took care tbat bis earliest ioipreession of her ahould be only an agreeable one.
She was peerless iu her lovlinesg, her grace, her mental gifts: she would have adorued a royal court. Edward was a scholar and a passionate admirer of beauty. It would have beeu a marvel if one like him had re aisled ber enchantments, fnr she was the very spirit of beanty.

He did not mentally compare her with Emily. He was nol thinking of Emily when when he said to himaelf that the world could contain no face more enchanting than that of this charming guest; but duriug the hour that Helena stayed he experieuced a pleasnre, the nature of which he coutd hardly have

" No—there is no hope," she replied gent¬ ly, but firmly. '*I forgive the pain you have given me, utiT i oiKE xot bisk that pain AGAIN. We can never be more than what we are now to each other !"
The words wero sacred—they proved true. He went out from her presence ashamed, aud their paths uever were the same again.
Edward Vane saw tbe dupe—the plaything ] have excelled was one upou wbich they had
bestowed commensurate pains. Those, for example, wbo are distinguished for the beauty of their style have acquired tbeir skill as tbe artist acquires bis power of drawing—not by contenting themselves with the first rude aud rapid draught, bnt by repeated reference s to better models, by an incessant renewal of their attemps, aud by the untiring correction of defects. Every one knows that Pascal wrote each uf his "Provincial Lettera" raauy times over. The draught of his "Epoqnes de la Nature" which Buffon sent to the press was the eleventh. TUe Benedictine editor of Bosauet's works, stated that his manuscripts were bleared over with such numerous iuter- lioeations that they wero nearly illegible.— Burke penned his political pamphlets three times at least before they were put lato type, and then he required to have a large margin for his manifold corrections. Sterne was in¬ cessantly employed for six months in perfect¬ ing one very dimiuutive volume. "I mention this," aaya Paley, lo whom weoweoar know- leilge of the fact, "for the sake of those who are not sufficiently apprised that in writing, as in mauy other things, ease is not the re¬ sult of negligence, but the perfection of art." The proposition that uncommon excelleuce arises from the concucrence of great talents with great indnstry ia supported by so many examples that they niigbt be proiluced by tho acore. The extraordinary effect, iudeod. of sustained applioation might almost seem to counteDance the saying of Buffon, that "ge¬ nius vas patience." The idle may dream over tho fancied possession of intu'tive pow¬ ers which they never display. Those wbo enter tbe arena and engage iu tbe contest know that strength-cannot be pnt forth with¬ oat strenuoas exertions, nor .•?kill be mtnt- festet^ withont assiduous practics. ^•¦•fc- ¦ -

Would be able to ¦' work hi:* owu way," slow¬ ly, perhaps, but surely aud aii>ler.staudingly. He wonld at every step gain s'kill and mental power, and cultivate self-reliance—a habit of mind worth iulluituly more than any amount of mere iuformatinu, .so called.
This method of giving assistauce will donbl¬ less require more skill and time ou the part of the teacher, thiin the former; but the teacher must conault the good of the pupil, and not his own ease. The pupil's mind can no more be developed, and made to act with vigor and precision, wirhout being severely aud persistently exercised and taxed, than his body cau be nourished and made to grow without digesting its owu food.
Another instance of mistaken kindness is iu plyiug the pupils witb a multitude of questions to obtain au answer that ought to be given at once, and without any repetition or multiplication of questions. We have an example fresh in our memory :
At a recitation in Nnglisb grammar, the sentence, " Draco wrote laws for the Atheni- nians," is read, and a pupil is called up to parse Draco; when the following dialogue betweeu tbe teacher and pupil ensues : "What part of speech is Draco?" "A noun." "What kind of a noun?" — "Proper." "Wbat unmber?" " Singular.'* " What gender ?" " Masculine." " Wha t person ?" " Third." " What case ?" " No m- iuative." " To what ?" "Wrote." "Rale?" "The subject of a finite verb is put in the nominative case." Now it is hardly necessa¬ ry tu a'lil, that eveu a beginner iu grammar, after having heard a few ex'imples, ought to be able to parse the word aj follow--^, on being called npon by the teacher to do so : '' Draco is a proper noun, of the masculine gender, third person, singular number, and nomina¬ tive case to wrote;" to be followed by the rule as above. Tbis practice of continual ques¬ tioning encourages the pupil to " holdback," and to give answers uo faster than they, are literally drawn. It prevents the formation of independent habits, is a foolish waste of time, aud a useless and very severe tax upon the healtb aud lungs of the teacher.
It is unwise to allow popils to help liacb other iu the preparation of their lessons, un¬ less in extreme cases. Such permission is very gratifying to pupils, but it encourages them to lean upon others, rather thau upon themselves.
Bribing scholars to refrain from doing wrong, by promises of some little indulgen¬ ces, such as " being excused early," and the like, is injudicious in the extreme. Uncon¬ ditional and unreserved obedience and con¬ formity to all the requirements and regula¬ tions of school are to be insisted on as a matter of duty, without the promise of in¬ dulgence or special privileges in retnrn. The question of commending and recording su¬ perior merit, is another and a differwflt ques tion altogether.

We have a goodly number of these relics still standing, and to the shame of Direotors they are used as tenements for children. A description or two may not be out of place. During my last visitation, I drove one morning in search ofa school-house, through a pretty good shower. On nearing the place I began to look oat for a place to tie my horse. The centre of tbe road was filled with stone and solid enough —but either side presented a miserible spec¬ tacle of potter's clay and tuft gra-is. After some hesitation, I forced my hoise in the mire and secured biia to a post. I ivas after¬ wards told that about a qaarter of a mile farther on I might have found 3oli<i footing. The least rise iu tho creek aud thn floor of the house is cover¬ ed with water, from an inch to afoot deep.— In casea of a and tie u storm—the scholars adjourn from their tieats to the desk, and if this won't do they week refuge on the paved highway. 1 might tell of others built on bills so ateep; and surroauded by ravines so deep,; tbat. tbe ^ooly way...o^'-;Succe83 is ot*t rude bridges and up slippery paths. Some staud in the midst of tombstones ; to defaue which, may afford daily amusement to wioked boys.
Mnoh as we may love a lonely ramble among ihe tombs of the departed, and how ever healthful the lessons there taught us, we oannot tielieve that the tombs of our ances¬ tors is the fittest place (ox tbe plays of oUj. childhood.
May we not ask of the Direotors and Parents of this coanty, that more attention be paid to this, subject iu the fature thau has beeu in the past? May we not hope that, hsreafter, every house will have, at least, a half acre for play-groand, and if possible, more? Xo dan¬ ger 0^00 much. Ifthe ceutre of yoir sub- district happens to be iu a marsh, do uot be afraid to step aside a few hundred yards to aecure a better site. Do not hesitata about buying a good situation, even if a bad oue is offered to you cratis. You would not thauk a man who would givo you the fever- If you cannot get a proper place, better wait a year louder. Rather tban build a house in a stone quarry or in an old lime kiln, submit to in¬ conveniences in other directions. Tba day is is coming when, instead of wishiag thf school house miles away, every oue will want it on hia farm, aud near his owu door. The days of school rapine, robbery of orchards, aud destruction wantonly of propertyby the " big boya," is rapidly passing away—already it is frequently mentioued on sale bills, as a fact that will probably enhance the value of the real estate, that a school houae stands somewhere near by. Were I a landholder, waited on by a committee of Directora in re¬ ference to the purchase of a school site, my only conditiou wonld be, that they must bny an acre and uot leas, aud keep it well fenced and well fitted for a cUild'a recreation. I would rather give an acre thau sell au eighth. Iu the oue case, I know I should have but little trouble; in the otber, I should think it atrauge if I was not annoyed. But enough has been written to read at one sitting, and perhapa it will anawer for more ; and we will close our rambling remarks for the present. JNO. S. CRUMBAUGH, County Superintendent. ¦^^——
