THE PECULATIONS OF FENN 8Y1.VANIA
CENTRAL BAILBOAD EMPLOYEES.
We have already noticed the fact that a wholesale system of robbery, by cerlain con¬ ductors aud ticket agents on the Pennsylvania Central Railroad, had been suspected for sev- er.tl months post, and that ageneral examina¬ tion had taken place, resnltingin the recovery of cash, stocka, property, &c., to n vrry con¬ siderable amount—being thc proceeds of tick¬ ets taken up by conductors and returned fo ticket agents andotbers to be resold—togothor wilh daily appropriations from eash collec¬ tions by conductors on trains.
While at Columbus, on Tuesday, we were informed by a gentleman from Pittsburg, that this system of robbery had been In praciice for over a year past, and that thc chief officers of thc road had had suspicions all along that they were being defrauded, but wore unable to obtain any clew for months, although a spe¬ cial detective had boen on the lookout for the guilty parties.
The Vice President, Mr. Scotl, had ascer¬ tained that one conductor had purchasod a property in Philadelpbia, for which hc paid $12,0l)U cash. He had no means when hc went into the road a year or two previous.— Auother conductor was paying SHOO rent, wbile his salary wns but SToU. These and other men who were Uving beyond their in¬ come were watcbed, but nothing wrong could be detected. It was clear, however, lhat a large amount of the casb coUeciions were be¬ ing withheld daily, andit isstated that as much as tiO per ceni of the amount collected by certain conductors wns retained.
..¦Vj3 the money did not come in fast enough under tbis system, n combination wtis formed between some ten or twelve conductors and some half dozen ticket agents or sellers on the Pennsylvnnia Central, who were In league. Ii is believed, with similar employees on other roads, direci connections of tho Penns^dvania Ccnir.ll, by which n certain aniount nf tickets taken up daily should not bo punched, as re¬ quired, but should be returned io lbe ticket agenis io be resold.
Numerous plans and traps were devised and set to detect the guUty oues, but up to lasi week all had been faUures. Men were at last employed, who purchased tickets in Cincin¬ nati and Columbus for Philadelphia. These lickcls were privately marked, and the dny (hey were used, .ts well aa tbe mime of the conductor, were reported to headquarters. It was found in several instances ihat these tick¬ ets, altliough used, were not reported for len days, and were of course resold.
A certain party in Pittsburg applied to thc ticket agent in that city, a week ngo, io know ifhe would scUihePillsburgand Phihidclphia portion of ihrongh Cincinnati coupons. This led thc ticket agent to suspect somelbing wrong, nnd beforo giving nny (uiswcr he re¬ ported tbe matter to headquarters, Hc was then instructed to say lo the parly applying lo hnve tickets sold, that if he would briug local rickets he woubl sell them for him,but thai hc could not sell Ihc coupons. The result was that local tickets were brought, and thus thc robbery was dciccicd. Several suspected par¬ ties were tben questioned, ns io their complicily in Ihc matter, some ofwhom plead guilty and returned their ill-gotten property, whUe guUl wos fastened upon oihers.
The Vice Presidenfof ihe road, Jlr, Senll, has been at Pittsbnrg for several days making a thorough investigation. Wc believe eight conductors and four ticket agents have .already been suspended. They had regular offices iu Pittsburg, Ilarrisburg ami Phihidelphla, and were systematically organized. It is believed Ihat two or more conductors on the Pittsburg nnd Fort AVnyne ro-td nre implicated, and it is feared lhat employees on Ihc other Oliio roads arc equally guilty. What amount the Penn¬ sylvania Ccnlr.al ha.s lost is not kuown. butwe have heard very large figures mentioned, Thc result ofMr. .Scott's investigations will proba¬ bly be made known before long.
DESPERATE PRISON INSURRECTION. The New York papers give the particulars ofthe desperate attempt of six convicts to es¬ cape from Sing Sing prison. The projector of lhe plan was Tom Ivelly, a notorious fellow, who has hitel}' given a great deal of trouble In the keepers, and who has been for some time past subjected to thc ball and chain, as well as lhe vizor punishment, for his misconduct. It was hoped by Kelly and the few who had become parties to tbe plot, that b3' a sudden dash tlicy might murder the guard, seize the .^loop, whicil laj' at thc prison dock, nnd during the confusion which was sure to ensue, pui off io thc mountains on the opposiie side of thc river, whence it would be easy to make good their escape.
Accordingly, when it was believed that the favorable moment for pultiug their scheme inlo e-xecution had arriveil, Kelly, who by some means bad managed to free himself from his irons, rushed upon Mr. Ilosiro, the keeper in charge, und thrust a knife iijto his groin. The blade pas.sed upward and ripped open the poor fellow's abdomen, infiicting a wound which at oncc rendered liini helpless, A run was then made toward the slooji, b3' Kelly and Iiis confederates, who raised the crj* of •'come on, boys!"
TllC whole atfair transpired so suddenly*, however, that none of the prisioners, except tbose already in ihe secret, followed hiin, and by the lime the conspirators had renched thc vessel the other keepers were in pursuit of ihcin. On Ihe deck a terrible struggle ensued. The six men fought, witli desperation, and Capt. Lafarge, the conimauder of the sloop, wdio was on board when the irritptlon was made was fatally stabbed in the side by one ufthe ruffians, nnd also wns struck upon the head with a stone.
Some ofthe oihcr convicts who hnd been to the scene ofthe atfr-iy, pralsewm-thlly went io the assistance of the keepers, and finally the rcvoUcrs were secured. Before this had been nccomplished several shots had been fired by the guard.«, but none of the prisoners were much injured. Thc prison is greatly crowded, thei'e being now 1,300 inmates of il.

TonAUCO.—This great staple product of Virginia, says the Lynchburg Republican, is cbming into our market in iinnicn.se quantities, andjust now In n loo.-:e stole principallj'. It is alwnys common for this market lo be sup¬ plied with loose tobncco in some extent from curing time in tho Fnll uniil Chrislmas, the supply being hrought in ns :i general thing by those living coniiguous to ihcaliy and.;wbo raise the weed in small quamitics. But from the number of carls ami wagons tvhich wc sec daily unloading ni onr warebousos, it is fair to suppose Ihui .such nnoilier crop has no) been made In Alrgiuin nt least for j'c.irs past. The prices for the lot.sc article are con¬ siderably depressed, owing doubtless to ihe great "glut" and the expectation of ihc large coming crop.

THE TEXAS EXCITEKENT. The people of Tctas seem to be rapidly going crazy with excitement about aboliiiou burnings, plots .and other direful cilamltles, nnd iliele.-ist suspicion is siitHcient to seal a ni.-in's death ¦warrant, Thc unreasonable nnd unreasoning character of this excitement, is shown by the foUowing slatement iu the !Xow Orleans Pica¬ yune -
** Mr. Savers, who hns been for twenty years engnged in buying und selling slock in this 6iiy, early in the summer made a trip to Texas wilh theintention of purchasing and stocking II farm. With this object he ninde n tour tlirough nearly all lhe counties of Northern .ind iiiddle Texas, aud Imppened to be near Dallas, ou his return io New Orleaus, ahoutthe time the disastrous fire broke ont in that place. From Dallas he traveled by stage to P.ilesline, in Anderson conuty, finding ihe whole people excited iu the highest degree by the danger nbout theiu. A machine has recently been invented for making wool for mattress filling, out of wood, A solid block of maple, basswood, quakiuT ash or nny other sweet scouted, inexpensive wood, is rapidly converted into a fibrous ma«s, much resembling whiie hurse hair, aud this makes escellent filling for mattresses, and IB much cheaper thnn hair, wool or cotton, and much better than husks, moss, sea-grass, &c. The machine is not expensive, and can be set up in any place where wood is plenty, and where there is water or steam power. It can b» worked by an ordinary mechanic.
