with the inother when this sndden end of all her hopes beimmbed and paralyzed every facalty, she would have kept with miserly tenacity everything that had belonged to hfm —his w&tob, hia books, tbe very gJovea he had worn, and of course the wife that had been called by his name. She seemed to ral¬ ly first from the shock, thoagh there was hereafter nothing for life to give, while Nonie, for whom thia early hope might have " set Into Banrisa,"iftypro8trate, inconeolable, weep¬ ing ont her youth and strength in the closed chamber where he had died, or stealing like a ahadow from room to room, whence every ray of snnligbt waa excluded. No wonder tbat she "dwiued" into the fitfal, capricioua, aim- leaa child tbai Madam Lenox wondered at, yet softened towards, for were not those wild bursts of wailing for her dead aon ? And if she was strangely inconsistent at times, in longing for sunshine and liberty, or foolishly set on dainties that were not, good forher,
cried out for her. Kven if ahe would listen to him, he had no right to nae hia guard¬ ianship to lure her to the dull, - dreary fate that life witb bim would be. Sbe was so young, she woold forget tbe past, and marry some one nearer her own age, and bloom out once more iuto lbe freshness of her early life. Poor child, wliat a sorrowfnl blight it bad been I How could he bring her " out of the shadow iuto tbe sun ?"
"Nonie is far from well," be ventured to say to Madam Lenox, the first time he saw her qnite alone ; " she needs some cbange, X think." And be looked away from ber face, whib he banded her the deed he had brought for a signature.

It was curious to see Archibald Lennox buy¬ ing sugar plums like auy scbool boy. It would i;ave seemed a strange proceeding to those who knew him as the acuta aud patient lawyer, the learued member of the Historical Society, tbe author of tbose excelleut articles on Continental Literature in tbe "Ultra Ma¬ rine Review." Thfi pretty French girl behind the counter at Malliard's, who snapped ber wonderfully hlat:k eyt'S—all to uo purpose— as ribe gave bim tha cbange, kuew him only as one of her leyuhir customers, and thougbt it the most natural thing iu tbe world that bj should walk in three uigbt:< out of the week and inquire for cbocolate creme ?nd tbose de¬ licions little vanillc putFi tbat were fresh for tbe evening parties served by monsieur, ber employer at th.it bour. "lie is thf good oncle," said sbe to berself iu oue of the long mirrors that rellected herljr.iids aud llouuces- and sbe nodded ihougblfuUy to those black eyes sbiuing out oftbe plate ylass upou her—¦ "or graudpere—wbo cau tell ? He havesome leetle vous !"
She was wroug in her couclusion.s, Archi¬ bald Lennox passetl three evenings of every week in the parlor of bis stap-mother. Madam Lennox; and ou the sofa, that wide old hair¬ cloth sofa that fiUed up halfof ouu aide of tbe room, he usuaUy fouud a little figure stretch¬ ed at fall lengtb, wr.ippad in a shawl at this time of the year, though tho large grate with its brass ornaments glowed agaia.
"You are so late, Brother Archie, I thougbt you would never come ?"
Why should he bn required to place this impatifuce to tbe score of tha daintias he oarried ? Of conrse, it was only tbe cremes she cared aboat, but still to thiuk that any one watched for him, for aoy re.ason whatever, sent a quickening pulse throngh tbe wbole frame of the grave, uuimpressible man before her. His life bad been so louely I Ever siuce he used to steal in that very room when ahoy and gaze with awe aud wouder upon a pictare that bad long since beeu removed from its place of honor over tha mantle—iho picture ofhia dead motber, with a far-off unchaugiujj smile upon her lips—bis life had been one long solitude, broken only by oue love, aud thr.t was iu the past now, shut up iu tbe dreary vault that bad stolen bis molhar from him. He remembered when his step-mother oame, and wh.at a stately, haudsome womau she was, for all tbat she was not in her first yontb; stately now, when almost as many more years had passed away, and tba shaJow of a great loss compassed her. Sbe bad al¬ ways bean kind and generous towards ber husband's son ; but the tail, shy hoy needed wooiug to unfold bis beart to bar, ^aod she did not anderstaud that, auy more tbau sho ^id the caprices of tha child lying on tbe sofa there now.
"You have one of those wicked headaches again, Nouie." And hn stooped a very little over the prostrate figure.
" Yes, all day ; I am almost distracted with it. Give me your band-there, see how hot my forehead is. Smooth it for me, there's a dear old fellow, won't you ?"
"Wouldn't he ? She little knew how happy he was to draw the lumbering mahogony chair between her aud lba ligbt, after bis due saln- lation to Madam Lennox, and press his long, sleuder hand, soft as a woman's, on her ach¬ ing brow, or smooth the silken bands of soft brown hair, wbile she lay so still, anrl the closed eyelids throw a shadow on ber white face. How round, with what a wild-rose flush it was when he first saw it, tbree years he¬ fore ! How nervous and ill at east? be felt when he came to be presented to the youug bride. He wauted to love her, for Gordeu's sake, he hoped he would not be repulsed by his solemn uncouthuess; for Gorden, his step¬ brother, was all the world lo bim, aud though he had made up his mind bravely to give up the best place in his aflactiouatn heart, he did not want wholly to be cast ont.
" Sh^says you are a good old bear, Archie" —and the yonug man enjoyed bis child-wife's Bauciness, aa be r.*peatad it. "Thai's wbat ahe aaid about you last uight, old felhiw."
He was old—thirty five his next birth-day, —and looking quite forty, from tho height of hifl pointed ebirt-coUar .and the ancient atyle ol bair-dressiug-which ho still patronized.— He felt like Gorden's father, and indeed be hadTjeen such the lasl ten years, father aud brotber both; tbe boy was'the light of his eyes aa he had beeu the delight of his sby, silent youth, " Gorden's wife!" Liltle she knew how richly endowed with love and tender watch-care she was wben she b.^came such; for wbeu he brougbt her from her fair South¬ ern home and yonug brothers and sisters to this stately but dreary house, she felt that but for tbe auusbiue of her bi^and'a love, she would have frozen into a statae as still and as ohill as those lhat looked out from their niches iu the library.
"Audthey will bave children, dear,early- hatred little ones, as Gorden was when I first came bome (rom college, and I shall be god¬ father and uncle, .ind have some object to work for—lo settle somo of tbem iu the world and so grow old with warm young hearta arouud me, and leave them all I have," mused Archibald Lanox.
Bat this was not to be. Scarcely bad tho courtly congratulations of old frienda ceaaed, and the sharp pang of a mother's jealousy, at finding herself no longer first, died oat, when death came, and left tbe bride a widow's gar¬ ments for her wedding garland, andthe motber childless.
"Keep Nonie with jon, mother; ahe is a part of me. Nonie, you will not leave my poor mother." And the stiflening handa ' dosed upon theirs in solemn compact. With theTonng wife the elightest wiah was as a law, and thoogh there wu little oatward warmth
waa only a self-willed ohild, and they must have patience till she came to womanhood.
"Sttch au ogress I" complained Nonie, to ber fast friend and confldant, the grave broth¬ er Archie she had been so afraid of at first. "Oar hoasekeeper, Batler, yoa know—she will not bave a solitary bit of dessert, except frait sometimes, which is all very well in its way, bat when one is longiug for a carrant pudding, or a tnille fruits ! She aaya I mast eat solids, if ever I wish to be strong again; batch, Brother Archie, if she knew how I Jong for a macaroni even, sometimes, it would melt the heart of a stoue I If you could only see one of old Maumer's poand-cakea, or frait cakes, either?"
" Aud where do they get auch things, Nonie? At the baker's ?"
" No, you dear old soul, atthe confectioner's. Once"—he kuew very well when it was, hy the pause—"wben I firat came heie, yoa know, we used to go almost every evening, after the opera or a concert, to tbat nice Mall¬ iard's ; but mamma never eats c( nfectiona— she waa never young, yon know—and, though I look and look at every such place when we are driving out, sbe never seems to see."
" If that is all, you shall be made happy, Nouie. I will bring yoa aome of those things myself."
"But that 13 not all. Batler interferes with everything, aud at bome I always had all my own way, yoa know. There ! that is a speci¬ men"—as thedoor slowly opened, and an an¬ cient face, with silver-rimmad spectacles, ap- p.'ared aud withdrew; "she haa come to let you understand that it is time yoa went away. She does not like me to sit up a minute after mamma bas gone to bed. I sit up, and sit up very late, I know, l caunot bear to go through tbose great gloomy passages, and my room is just like a hannted chamber. Thosehigb posts to tbe bed, and tbe curtains, aud tbose great, heavy wardrobes—I always imagine there isa mau inside, aud yet I dou't dare to look, for fear there ehould be one, and so I creep into bed, aud lie staring at tbe wall, if it is moon¬ Ught, and listen to the creak, creak of some door, or tha rattle of the atair wiudow, till I am ready to scream with fright. I tbiuk tbe shadows ara blacker in this honae than any¬ where else!"
Kind old bear that he was, he could not con¬ qner her terror, bat he did what he could :— heuce the bon-bons.
The room was very dusky, for all the glow of tbe firo-ligbt—no gas; Madam Lenox in¬ veighed agaiust it, as ruinous to the eye3—and the tall, astral lamp, with an autique femalo in bronze supporting it, failed to do more than light lba ceutro of tbe wide apace in which it stood. The bigb ceiling aud heavy cornices, the closed mahogany foldiug-doors, with heav¬ ily carved pillars, which shut off the library wera all in shadow. Archibald looked around bim, after Madam Lenox had retired, the eve¬ ning of tbe cruel headacha, and remembered what a dull, ghostly room it always was lo him iu early lifa.
Nonie, the child, was sitting up by this time, aud the wai m, soft sbawl was thrown back. A slight, undeveloped figure, in a close black dress, with that pale face, and eyes a little sunken, though large and blue aa tbe sky.— They followed bim about the room. " Just look at that old cabinet, aud that great screen iu tbe corner, and the two chandeliers in bagg. Did they ever have candles in them ? Did yoa ever sea tbem lighted ? And that black rim inside all the picture-frames I. I sit and shiver here nights, aud, wheu I make myself go to bed finally, I lly tbroagh tbe hall as if some awful shape followed me ; aud when I get to my own room and look the door, my heart beata so fast, and I think that I am stifiing I Do you know, I almost asked Bridget to sleep in my room I If I only bad a dog I conld speak to, when I lie there alone in the night !"
" Poor little dove !" He put ont his arms iuvolantarily, and she fluttered np from tbe sofa, aud perched upon his kuee.
"Ita no wonder I have headaches, is iti Brother Archie ? I often feel in tbe morning, as if I bad not closed my eyea, and, when I do, I have such horrid dreams! I see, I see hint, yoa know, so very, very ill, or lying here dead—not dead, only going to be buried alive, and I cauuot make peojile understand or believe it—uo ona but you. Yoa always seem to."
"Do I, Nonie?"
" Yea, bat they won't listen to yoa, either ; but go on, aud carry him a way. Oh, it is horrible! I sbould die if it wasn't for yon. Archill" And ahe nestled back against his broad sboulder, and cried in auch a still, patient way that the drops seemed to fiow in aud chill his heart.
It cost a great struggle, but presently he said : " It is too much for yon, Nonie. Wo shall bave to give yoa up, and let you go back to your own home again." " 0 no, no! I promised Gorden !" " I know, buthe wished only your happiuess. He did not mean to sacrifice you to us."
" But mamma—sbe would miss me, I know for all aha is so quiet. Sbe would have no oue but Butler to speak to, and now we talk aboni him, sometimes, and all he did and said when be was a boy, and how you loved him, and how good you alwaya were to bim."
" Does Mra. Lenox aay tbat ?" He did uot know tbat abe bad ever seen, much more, ao¬ knowledged bis devotion to her idol.
" 0 yea, aud bow good yon were when his father died, aud how you helped him on iu business! Why, what else makes me love you so, Archie?" " Doyou love me?"
"Dearly! There!" And sbe kissed bis cbeek, of her own free will, the first kiss she had given auy one sinca that last unheeded pressnre on her dead hnsband's brow. " Gor¬ den told me I mast love you, beforo I came here, and, before he left me, he told me often to go to you with everything that troubled me aud that you would alwaya take care of me." " I wiU, I will, Nonie I Whom elae have I to take care of?"
" It makes me so quiet to sit here. I am not afraid of anytbing now ; I wish I could always feel go brave; bnt this hoase always had such a still, gloomy look. It was aummer, you know, when I came home, bnt I shivered when I came into it. Do yon believe in pre¬ sentiments ? I think it waa becaase Gorden was goiug to go so soon ; but when you are here, it seems differant. The minnte I hear yon open the front door and come throagh the hall, I stoop to look around so, over my sboulder." She gave a backward glance, and her eyes diliated, as a ohild lookiug into darkness. " Why can'tyon alwaya atay?"
Struggle as he wonld againat it, aa he bad many a time before, the wish that ahe could stay, that he had the right to shield her always, rnshed into his mind, and ha oould not drive it forth, for all it seemed like trea¬ son to hia dead brother, end selfiah treachery to the trustfnl, Tinworldly child whose head reated againat the strongly beating heart that
Yon forgot tbat sbe is only a obild madam ; she must have some indulgences."
" Sbe is almost nineteen. It is time she ceased to be considered a child."
" And what is before her ?"
" I do not underatand yon."
" What can be olfared her for the unthink¬ ing aimleaaness of her present life ? Will yon have teachers for her?"
" She doea not care to study. Sbe reads all day; she has takeu down every book in the lilrary."
" She mnat have-eociely, sooner or later."
" Wby necessarily ?"
The tone was so cold aud inditferent— though poor lady, she was far from feeling so —tbat it Btang tbe usually guarded mau to a retort.
" Why ? Because she is not to be sacrificed to a memory, holy and dear as it is to us!— This i.s no cloister. She will forget tbe past. Remember how short their acquaintance was. Is one year to cloud a lifetime ?"
"Hush! Not yet, Archibald!" And she waved him back, as if hia very presence dis¬ tressed her. Neither ber dread nor the cold¬ ness it counterfeited had aaved her from the sbock. She had been fearing this for days, knowing that he waa right, too, and for tbis reason trying to shnt her eyes to the truth- He would not preas her farther then; be was aoriy he had said so much, so be sat down in the old leathern arm-chair that bad been hia father's, as she went out of the room, and look a Vk»lume from tbe bookcase beside him. He conld not read, though ; hooks had lost their old spell of late ; time had heen wheu they could enchain bim in forgetfalness ofall thiugs, but now be listened unconsciously for the light step that he hoped would enter, and seemed to feel a fluttering touch upon his shonlder.— The peucil in his haud moved idly aloug the margin of tbe page, while an old rhyme came aud went to a measured music.
Wby bad fate marked him for anch a soli¬ tary, joyless life ? Why had Gorden received that good gift, the power ofn?inning love every¬ where, ftom his -vQTy nurses iu the cradle, from tbe rigid old honsekeeper, so severe to him from tbis youug beart, tbat clnng to him scarce knowing why, aud taking the tribute royally, as his due, so little appreciatiug it, making so little return ? What if any one had ever loved him, if his father had, to begin with, ao that he had not felt repelled, and ss if unwelcome iu the-house, nntil he withdrew to the sat of chambers where he had busied himself with his books I If he bad remained in this house, instead, and it had been his happy fortune to briug a wife here for his fath¬ er's blessing before he died, aud theu itwould uot have been so bitter to lose him, for perhaps his wifa would have won for bim tbe affection he naver could call oat. He would never have left the old house, nor would it have been dull and solitary- He would have studied—0 yes, bnt so eshaustingly. When languor begau to steal over bim, tbere would have heen a dear presence hovering around to win him awhile from his books, and Ibeu childreu, pcirhaps, dear little rosy faces to press lo his rough cheek, and shrieks of baby laughter, as his strong arms tossed the venturous, but half frightened child as far as he could reach, and a boy with open brow and large blue eyea—he did not stop to trace the likeneas—leaued npon his kuee, and asked thoughtful, stirring ques¬ tions of the heroea ke liad worshipped ia child¬ hood !
Ah me! He drew a long breath, and the vision faded—faded into the dim, solitary libra¬ ry, with ita russet-bound volumes, where he sat alone, quite alone in life- He took up his bat, aud ffent oat. Nonie wa.s on tho stairs, bnt be did not care to see ber just then, and she entered the library witha childish pout of disappointment.
"Hemight have waited one minute, I should tbink." It was so very unusual for him to come there in tbe daytime ; everylhing was in formal routine abont the house, aven his visits, and it was a pleasant snrprise to hear from Bridget that he was inthe honse. " l^^^a heen sitting here reading, I declare, and I dying to have oue to speak to ! It's too provoking 1" And sha took up tbe volume he bad jnst laid aside. "Making notes, as nsuall"—for the book opened, in the most obliging way, at the very page he bad been scribbling npon. Bnt it was no dry annotation ou the " Philosophy of the Conditioned." She saw lhat it wasa rhyme, and she puzzled out the crabbed law¬ yer's hand.
" Time, yon thief, who like to get Sweets Into yonr list, put that in. Say I'm waary. say I'm sad.
tiar that bealth and wealth have missed me, Eay I'm getting old, bnt add—
Nonie kissed nic!"
"So he liked it, dear old hearl" she thonght with a little thrill that was quite new to bar.
It was a dreadfully wicked thing to do, bat tbe little lady was famous for rash and sacri- ligious exploits, iu Mrs. Butler's eyea at least —she deliberately lore out the leaf, aUhough it was a fine library edition sho was rifling, and tbe abatracted pages contained tbe sum of a valnable argument, folded it nicely, and be¬ stowed it wbere all youug giris carry their treasures. The only tyranny that could master her woa atealing over her again, and preaently Nouie crept back to ber room wilh hoth handa pressing her throbbing head, aud lay there all tho long aftemoon in physical torment, with the, light shut out. Bat a pleasaut thought came now and then, for all tho pnin, and when the lamps ware lighted, she took up her old place on the sofa, although Mrs. Lenox did not come into the parior with ber, bat had the fire repleuisbed in the library to look over some papers discolored by time and filled with the exactness of legal documenla.
Nouie lay listeniug for the footstepa on the ataira, and a satisfied feoling that she shoald have Archie all to berself when he did come ; hat aleep atole over her nnawarea, and wben he came it was to find her quite unconscious of his presence. He sat down quietly in his old place, at the head of the aofa, an'j ventared to lay his hand lightly npon her head. She felt the touch even in her dreams ; her eyea half opeaed, and sbe murmured something dreamily as she reached upwards for his baud, and, clasping it in both her own, with a smile of welcome that had a uew depth and fondness in it, alept again, pressing his hand closely. Once she tamed, nestling dowu closer to the pillows, and he bent down his head to liaten. He expected to hear her husband's name, but she murmnred, " Dear old Archie I'* and, low and broken as the utterance was, It aet hia whole soul iu tumult, that aud the close olRsp- iug of his haud against her innocent heart.— He had not meant ahe sfaonid ever kuow what power her vary presence had over him; but sitting there ao still,' with only the shaded lamp and the glow of the firelight, looking downward spell-bound upon the dear faoe, and feeling every throb of that lonely Httle heart, how coald he oheok the rising tide of feeling that rose and heat ag^nat the barriers he had
set for it f It was a long, refreshing aleepi and sbe woke with tbe same new smile npon her face, looking np in his eyes, as she said:—
" I slept BO sweetly; it has rested me so. I was not afraid of anything; I felt all the time that you were here."
"Oh, my child," he said, passionately, " why msy I not watch yon so always ? Why must I ever leave ypa to suffer alone? I lie awake thinking of yonr terror at nigbt, and I long to gather yon so, ao—olose to my beart, aud drive away any shade, any pbantom of terror."
"Archie I you frigbten me now." And she shrank a Utile, it was so nniike anything ahe had ever seen in him before.
"Po I, darling? Forgive me! I never meaut to tell you of it, but, sitting here to¬ night watching you, I have forgotten myself Nonie, I cannot help loving yon. I believe I must bave loved you from the moment yon came to ua; but purely, Nonie, purely, God kuows. It never would have come to this, bnt yon are the only friend I have ; the only woman's hand I hava ever tonohed is this.— Let me love yon; I do not aak yon to love me."
" Bat what if I do, Archie f" and she repla¬ ced tbe hand he had released. " What if I want you to atay with me always ?" And she replaced the hand he had released. " What if I want you to stay with me alwaya ?" And she looked np into his eyea with a aweet, un¬ troubled glance, but meeting his tbey changed aud faltered, and fell again. " Do you think Ae would care if he kuaw I loved you ? he alwaya asked me to. I tbink it would have madu.him happy, if he knew yon oared for me ao much. Mamma oould tell ua; shall we ask her ?"
He passed his arm around her as she sprung up from tbe sofa, and held her closely to him one moment witb all the love of a lifetime iu that mate careas. " Ob, if yon are deceiving yourself, child I if I am suffering you to do it' God forgive me. It ia a terrible temptation!'' No wonder that Madam Lenox, nsnally so calm and nnmoved, looked np with a atart as they appeared before ber. The papers scat¬ tered over the desk were her son's letters., and letters addressed to him in his college Ufe > they had unnerved ber.
" We want to ask yon something, mamma," Nonie aaid, simply. " Archie wanta to stay with ns always; he loves me, I know; he loves me a great deal more than I deserve, or than any one else ever will. Don't you think tfaat it would have made tbe one we all care most for very happy if be had known it would hive been so, and tbat we shoald stay together al¬ waya, and Archie would overlook my foolish¬ ness, and try to make me good and wise as he is ?" Sfae lo.'ked up to him very proudly, with an almost wifely confidence, more assu¬ ring than many worda, when be felt so bum¬ ble and so nuworthy, too !
" Yes, it is better so ! Ifyou can love him enough to he happy, Nonie." And though her lips trembled, and her brow was knit with au inward pang of jealousy for the dead, better so than to see ber given to a stranger.
" Yoa forgive me, motber! I never meant this : I did not plan this selfishness; I did not dream of it, eveu to-day, when I talked with you."
"Ibelieve yon, Archie." She had never called him so before, or spoke iu auch a soft¬ ened tone in all tbose long years. " I can nu- atand impulses, even in you—aud myself, too," she added, smiling faintly- "All these have been pleading your canse"—aud sbe pointed to the latter. " I have never knowu before how mnch I have owed yoa for saving my boy."
lie uulerstood ; he remembered tho threat¬ ened disgrace, that neither would bring them¬ selves to apeak of, uow he waa goue, aud in Nonie'a presence, too.
"Theu I may iove Archie, mamma; you will say yes for him?'" And Nouie put her hand quietly into bis ; be did not dare to claim it, uow that the first exoitement had passed away; hecould only wonder at bis boldness, and diead self-deception on her . part.
"Oh, Nonie, I dare not take youl"' He aank down into the chair tbat Madam Lenox had left (for though sbe coald speak gener ously, abe could not see tbem together jnat yet,) and, drawing away from her, covered bis face with hia hands. " You Jo not kuow your own heart; it is only beeauso you are unsel¬ fish, and wish to'make me bappy."
" No, Archie, yon don*t understand ; I waat you to make me happy." And she drew his hands away, and perched herself upon his knee wilfally. "I waut yoa to make them give ma my own way, and to keep me from beiug afraid of my shadow, and to put your great arms around me always, and love me as you did just now, and I shall love you tbis way," and she showered little fluttering kisses about his face. Then a mora aqaiet, womaaly mood stole over her: '^ I waut you to teach me and help me to be all that I know I ought to be. I shall mind you always, for I kuow that there is nobody so wise, or so good, or so noble in the wbole wide world, and I do love you with all my heart; and I shall be so proud, so very proud aud happy to ba—your w(/e."
A part of tbis dream came true; for the rose- flush came baek to Nonie's cheeks with the new euergy and purpose of her life; aud, shall we acknowledge it? from tbe abstinence from Malliard's dainties, which sbe forgot to hunger after, now that Mrs. Buller's rule was abol¬ ished, and she went ahout like a steady little housekeeper, looking after all manuer of nuro¬ mantic affairs.
