He tlien married a Ger¬ man princess, and "was proclaimed King of AVeslpbalia. He went down with Xaiioluou's star, and after various vicissitudes, came up again with Lonis Napoleon's emergence in 18-18. Since then be bas resided mostly .at Paris. He bad a strong porsonal resemblance to Napoleon, bul tbougb a man of fair qnali¬ liea, was entirely devoid of bis brother's genius.

DEFOnE THE EXECUTION.
Tbe last bours of tbe unfortunate criminal in the cell below have almost orrived. AVe have called faim unfortunate, and in this we refer t,o his character as the cause of tbo ter-' rible, extreme at which be bas arrived. The laws ofGod and man demand the forfeiture of bis life. If human life was ever justly euded upon tbe gallows, surely his ligbt of life will be extinguished in accordance with tbc de¬ manda of justice.
Few more exaggerated cases of murder are known to the annals of crime. This, how-ever, docs not preclude us from pausing a moment, and permitting sorae feelings of pity and sym¬ pathy to gather about a mnn whose physioal, mental and moral constitution seem to be sucii as lo afford no barrier against the assaults of temptation—nol preventive to thc commission of any crime, however heinou.s in the sight of Gud and man; but whicii seemed rather to drive him forward with an irresistable impulse, into the foulest aud deepest depths of guilt.

The figbt commenced at 7 o'clock in the morning, and lasted three hours, resulting in the defeat of the AVelchman, by bfs giving what tbe fancy term a *' foul blow." One hundred and ninety- five rounds were fought. The men, we are informed have been in training for the past two months, one at Pittston, and the other nt Scranton, aud the contemplated mill was kept very secret. Botb parties suffered very severe punishment, one ofthem havingbeen eutirely blinded. Betweeu one and two thousand spectatoTB are represented to have been pres¬ ent. It is said that the origiu of the match was a difficuUy which originated between the parlies some time since abont a woman.

cai-eer is now about Io close with a felon's death and a felon's grave are either too stupid or, like him, tuo hard-hearted 10 comprehend thc fact, there are no circumstances which more entitle a man to the commisseration of his fellows than the accidents of his character and constitution. The incitements of sudden temptation, tbe blinding imimlses of powerful motives, muddcned passion and raging <lesii-c may be overcome, provided ihore be a retreat to some rock of defence in the moral or re¬ ligious nature.
But the isi^ues of a heart totally pervesc arc boyond human control. 'In tbe case of Hahu- EN there seems to liavc been au nlmost enlire destitution ofthe atiribute of conscience, and a perfect blindness to the consequences of crime. No one cognizant oven of tbe more prDinineni facts of ilie case cnn avoid this conclusion. AVc believe he is a ca.su .such as the world lias seldom seen—one of thc few in¬ stances of a man utterly wanting in all thnse boiler qnalities which con.«tituie ihe relieving, features of humanily.
There is uo other way of accnuutiug for the conduct of one who could, under n .solemn lu-oniise, debauch the female to whotu he was .•sustaining the relaiion uf a spiritual adviser, ami distributing the elemenl.s of a holy sacra¬ ment—who cuuld nse the pure and .-ipotless robes ofit sacred calling, fo conceal thc dark tlesigns and fiendish machinations of a uuirtler —who conld. to eap ihe climax of iniquity nnd .surpass all ouv cuiiceptions of human depravi¬ ty, sland up iu the pulpit and pretend to ex¬ pound the oracles of Heaven, exhorting to purity and holinc.*5S, love and mercy, wliilsl his hands were red with thc blood of one who was leaning upon his bosom, and trusting in hint as a guide tlirough a wicked world to a brighter one beyond. Surely, this is literally '•stealing the livery of Heaven to serve the Devil iu."
These things, together with liis cool, delib¬ erate perjury, make it coneltisivetbat no qualm of Conscience or feeling of sympathy ever in- icrposed the least obstacle to llu' commission of his enormous crimes.
xo llEMOKSE.
Duriug ihe long fifteeu months of his con- fincuienl, no remark has escaped his lips which gave the lca.«t indication of remorse of con¬ science, or a reali'/ntion of his danger, until after his conviction nnd sciucncc. Before and during his trial bis conversation was always easy and cheerful, sometimes even joking at his own situation, yet generally dignified nnd with a well studied air of innocence. Hc once said to a reporter, that a few months before he was but au nnknown jkleibodist preacher, tbat he could vide his borse through town anil not even the little boys would haloo after him, now evei-y eye was strained to get a sight of him. He spoke freely of tbc circumstances of bis ease, and the varion-'^ inHneiicfs th.it wunld have a bearing upon it; inquired the state of feeling towards him oulside: inlinintcd that it would be better for bim to give np preaching afler hc got out of prison, and that be should take up the profession of l.aw. There was noihing. however, of ihc sadness and melan¬ choly, whieh even an innocent man would be expected to exhibit.
VISIT OF TUE 3I1X1STERS.
AVhen the Kev. Mr. Daj;. of thcM.E.Cbuvcb. and llev. Mr. Kirk, of the First Presbyterian Churcb of thia place, first visited him after his conviciiou, ihcy found him professing to be a prnyiug man and eutertaining a hope of being saved,.but plainly manifesting that be had no appreciation of his guilt. Tbey at once commenced endeavoring to show bim tbc utter hopelessness of his case, the monstrous load of sin that was resting upon him, the deep dye ofhis doubled and trebled crime, thc purity, Itolincss and justice of Him against whom be bad sinned and before whom hc was so soon to stand. Hc said he bad used every means to impress bimself with the hideousness of the crime of murder. Notwithstnnding tbese efforts, though sometimes he has been caused to despair, he has not unlil the last few daya given any indications of thnt remorse of couscieuce, deep contrition and penitence which bis heart, truly aroused, must have manifested ibougb he was frequentl}- in a melling mood and wept freely.
TIIK LAST FEW DAYS.
In the last few days there seems to have been n change in tbis re.ipcct. At a meeting on Weduesday niglit, one of tbe clergymen mentioned, stated that his language was now^ nil which tbat of a penitent could be, tuli- matiug, however, that it migbt be the efi'ect of iufiuence exerted upon him, and not risiug spontaneous in his heart. He certainly cnter- lained a firnt hope, ever s.iying that hc eould go to lhe scaffold without fear of death—that il. has no longer any horrors for him. AA'heu we rf'Cfiilly interrogated him on fhia point, be replied, ** Jly hope is very strong to-day, .ftrongcr.. thnu It has been before. I do feel that God\H mercy nud a Saviour^s 7ncrits reach even my ease. In this confidenee he sftid be would ascend 10 the gallow-s.
TUK CONFESSION.
Harden's confeasion will not, prob.ibly, ever be made public. He h;is sent- it to his fatlier who ia to usehis discretion about its publica¬ tion. His father is a fine vespectable old jus- lice of the peace, and it i.H not probable that be will permit it to go before tbc public. He has confessed in detail to his counsel and spiritual advisers, all of whom, we arc lold, say they will uever make it public. Sume thinga have come out tbrough the Sheriff and othors, wbich are eagerly seized upou, buf we cannot vouch th.tt all .ire true: .such as thnt he gave her the first dose of arsenic sprinkled on part ofan apple, while she wa.^ sittiug ou his knees; she thougbt sometbing tasted grit¬ ty j be said it. was ^*nothing ;'' that be gave ber a wbole vial full of laudanum undcr the pretence of giving cordial; that he purchased auother piiper of ar.'ienic in Easton, besides the one be got of Hecht: ibai the last aud fatal dose was uearly a teaspoonful of arsenic given iu a bowl of ginger tea; tbat she sus¬ pected him before she died, ttud tried to tell it, but was too near gone, and other things, which, if true, vcry severely affect the charac¬ ters of some other females of his charge: this latter, however, we regtird as a pnre fabvica- tiun. He yc-sterday said be should make no remarks from tbe scaffold but to bid thc peo¬ ple good bye. He talked cooly about, bis funeral, and suggested tbat nothing be said about him in the fuueral sermon.
TUE LAST FAKKWELLS.
His brother, a young mau. was with him most of yesterday: they sang and prayed to¬ gether, aud look leave of each otber. His mother has not aeeu bim siuce his trial, wheu she was here to testify'. She is a fiue old lady nnd will uot probably survive thc stroke loug. His fatber took leave of him some time ago. His counael, Messrs. Shipman and Dcpue, took leave of bim last night, and will not witness hia executiou. He bid bis friends good bye with warm expressions of gratitude and friend¬ ship, giving each bis card, containing simply "good bye. J- S. Haruex." AVritten iu a clear, steatly band. Thc one given to hs is much more steady and better flourished thun wc could do it.
EXCITEMENT IX TUE TOWX.
The town waa jammed with people. They began to come iu on Thuraday, and an-ivcd to-day in a continuous stream. They were chiefly country people, of raiher a rude cla.ss, witb a very large sprinkling of womeu. To their credit bo it said, none of the women of the village were to be seen. Many drunken meu were about tbe atreets. Some of them offered a quarter of a dollar to see Harden, others overbid, and offered half a dollar. A guard of soldiers were marched in front of the court bouse door, and about the cell windows and yard, and tbe balance of a corapany of thirty were in tbe jury room.
THE SCENE.
The weather ia fine though the sky is some¬ what cloudy; it rained freely last nigbt, so that there i.s no dust. Thc crowd about the door is such that it is almost impossible for tbe military to keep them at bay wilh guns loaded and capped and swords drawn. AVe noticed three women in ihe window to witness the executiou. Tbe jail-yard, about fifty feet square, and the four north windows were crowded with those reporters and others to whom the Sheriff had issued tickets. At ten minutes past teu o'clock the clergy went into lhe cell, and tbe counsel of the prisoner, who were again taking leave of him, came out. The barns and sheds about were covered with a crowd, hallooing and shouting, wbo had pnid for their seats; some of whom, perhaps, could see tbe head of the prisoner over the wall.
A crash outside indicated that one of the sheda had fallen in. Tho crowd in the yard and windows waited from 12 o'clock, wben they were admitted, until the final scene wilh a commendable degree of (ieconim; among them were many whose faoes indicated that they reaUied the aolemnity of the occaaion, and were brought Uiere by no idle curioaity. AVe noticed aome of the jurymen Trbo ooBvict-
ed bim. The trees were guarded, in apite of which some were filled to the top.
TUE ASCENT OF TUE SCAFFOLD.
At just half-past one o'clock, Harden with his arms pinioned'and tbe halter about his neck, tho clergy and the pbysiciaus came forlh from the eell," asceiidetl the scaffold wliere some chairs w-ere placed. All knelt in silent prayer for four minutes; then tbe Sheriff stopped down upon the drop und Harden .step¬ ped do^vn leaning upon his arm: be then shook hands with all upon tbc scaffoltl and said "good bye;" the Sheriff calmly but sad¬ ly adjusted the rope and put the black cap over his bead; afler whispering to him a mo¬ ment be put a wbite handkerchief inlo bis hand and descended to the end of tbe scaffold.
THE r.\LLIXG OF TIIE DROP.
Harden dropped the bandkercbief aa a sig¬ nal ; the sherifl' cut the cord, the ilrop noise¬ lessly fell, and all turned tlieir beads nway, uttering groans, and some bursting inlo tears; for tiiree minutes Ins body wns mure or less convulsed, his legs being drawn up and down, and his .shoulders jerking backwar.1 and for¬ ward; after that all was still. ,
Harden was dressed in his ordinnry clothing —black doth coat and pants, coaf buttoned up: during all this time he seemed cool but solemn, as feeling lhat he was about to go into etei-niiy. There waa litllo or no quivering of nerves! He fell about four feet, nol lUtcring a sound. Afteraeven minutea hispulse ceased. At twelve minutes past two. the rope wa^ loosened and he was let down.
.Thus cndeth tbe last chapter of a histoiy wiiicb we may vainly bope wiU uever be re¬ peated.

I..\.R(;K AJIOC.NTS hi-' COIIXTKRFEIT MOXEY PA.S- SKU UPON RANKS AND BAXKERS.
On Thursday last one of tbe most extensive and auccessful counterfeiting schemes ever known was consumafed in this city. A well dressed and business like nmn presented biiii- .self at thc counters uf sevei-.al bnnks, private bankers niidjii crcb ants, andobtained exchauge for bills on the Newton Bank of Massachuaetta. The bills were all for $1UD each, nnd were so well executetl as to excite uo suspicions of tbcir geniiiiicncss.
The ojicrator in each ca.se asked for AVcstern mouey, stating thai, hc wa." travelling to pur¬ chase woul liiroiigluiut the AVest. His care¬ less, easy bearing and convtr.satiun prevented all mistrust. Il is known tlmt $12lji) of the money was passed iu this city upon bankera, and since llie time of his opci-jiliou some of the bills have been ]mid into banks by resident niCfchanls, showing tbat (bo ti-ans.-ictioii.« were not coufined to bankers. It is impossible to aaccrlain the aniount paid over at this place, bill I here is reason ii> believe t4iat nuuicrotis partiea have been tiiailc victims.
No aiispjciuns were cntertauied iu regard io tbe money until a banking company, which had sent $300 of it to Nc\y York, received « despatch saying it was worthless. After this information some of the bills were taken to a large nuiuber of banking men, all of whnm pronounced them genuine. A prominent in¬ stitution here, this moruing refused to credit the statemeui that the bills arc fraudulent.
At. IJiiiralo, wc leurn that the ctmntcrtcitcr succeeded in gettiug rid ofa much larger sum tbau iu this city. It is supposed the same man operated iu bolh places, goiug to Bufftilo after his transactions here. The New Yurk Tribune of Saiurday stated that SriODDof ihcse notes liad been detected aud seut to Boston. As (hi.s occurred Iiefore nny of the money act atioat. in the West had gone Kast, it is probable that oiieratious have been siniultancous in a uumber of places, and tbat a large amount has ihus been put in cu.iculation.

The match botween tbeae celebrated trotters, at Suffolk Park Course, Philadelphia, postponed from tbe 3d inat. on accouut of the raiu, took place ou the afternoon of the Fourth of July, in the presence of a very large assemblage of apectators, tbe result being a triumph for "the little bay marc '' iu three straight heats. Thc track wns in excellent condition until tbe last bent, when n heavy storm of raiu made it very beavy, aa tbe time of the beat shows. Tbe betting was 100 to 90 on tbe horse among the uninitiated and plenty of takers st tbat, a great amount of monoy changing bands on the occa¬ sion. In the first beat Flora bad tbe pole, and took the lead after passing tbe stand, and maintaining it, passed tbe quarter pole half a length ahead, in 3^1 seconds, increased her lend and nt thc half-mile pole was at least two lengths ahead, tbe time being 1: 0^. Five times fhcy started witbout gettihgoff; but on the sixth trial they went nt the word. Flora roiuided the first turu half a length iu advance of the hor.se, and reached the quarter pole in Bb\ seconds.. The mare ou the fnr side broke, but was soon down to ber work again, the break not interfering mucb witb her; at tbis period areally splcndidcoutcstensucd, Patclicn work¬ ing his w.ay close upon her, but the mare never permitted him to take the lead even for an in¬ atant. fbi entering thc borne stretch, Patchen closed up witb her and another specimen of the abilities of these two spleudid trotters was shown, but the mare bravely held herown aud agaiu came lo sland a winner, butthis time by only half a length, tbe horse closing well in ou the last quarter; the time of the hnlf mile being 1:10], and the beat 2:21^-
Thiku He.\t.—In this be.at also the betting was merely nominal, every oue fightiug shy iu this respect. A hc-ivy atorm then came on, thc rain coming do^vn in torrents, making tbc track exceedingly heavy. Ou starting Patcheu had a little thebcst of it: but them.-ire passed him on the fii-st turn; wheu Flora went up ou the upper side, bowever, Patchen went ahead, taking the iuside; at tbis time the storm cul¬ minated, the raiu falling in torrents. Ou lhe fav side tbe horse increased tire distance be¬ tween theni, taking a lead of throe leugtha, but Flora shortly afterward, with one of her splendid efforts at once closed on bim, aud on entering the bomc stretch ihey were sitle by side, wheel and wheel, aud from this point tbe mare, with oue of ber fastest brushes, drew away from her companion and won the beat and the race iu 2:37A—ihc time of tho half miles being 1:17A.

GREAT DESTRL'CTION OF PROPEllTY.
AVhile Cincinnatti was visited by a tbunder storm between twelve nnd one o'clock on Sun¬ day moruing last, a very destructive tornado passed over Springfield at preciaely tbe .^me hour. The Jiepubh'n of the 2d instaut con¬ tains tull details, from which we extract lhe principal facts. The gale first broke forlh near the residence of Mr. Gwvxx, iu thenorth- wesiern part ofthe city, in a forest, ivJiere a single tree was riven to the ground. Tbere it swayed ovcr the college grounds iu a soutb- ensierly direction, destroying everything that lay its path.
The first premises struck were those of E. Gwynn. The house, u frjiiac, stood on the east side of Buck Creek, jusl west of IVitten- berg College, situated on a bigh point of rocks. Within were eight persons—the father and motber of Mr. Gwynn, his wife and children. Tbe bouse was thrown from its foundation, and dashed down thc rocky declivity to the BO utb eastward, utterly demolishing everything, yet strange tosay, seriously injuring no mem¬ ber ofthe houaehold. One little girl wns car¬ ried a distance of forty feet, on a featber bed, and laid upon tbc trunk of a prostrate tree. She gathered herself up and heroically made ber way to the college through thc beating rain, and brought a dozen or more persons to the rescue.
Three childreu were found fastened uuder a section of the siding of the bouse, the grand¬ parents were found cooped up in a section of the framework of the building, and though everything around tlicm, eveu to their bed¬ stead, was demoHshod, tbey were uninjured. Jlrs. Gwynn aud au infant child were found in anotber part of thc ruin, covered with a portion of a partition wall, the motber uot seriously injured, tbougb stunned and fright¬ ened, tbe iufant comfortably nestling in bed¬ ding, all unconscious of the desolating wreck strewed around.
Portions of the roof and sidtng of this house were carried full half a mile through the for¬ est to the eastward. This was the most com¬ plete wreck in tbia city, and the escape of the inmates was even miraculous.
Other damage was done in unroofing build¬ ings, etc., but tbe above was tbe most impor¬ tant.
Tbe Republic roughly estimates tbe loss to be at at not less than 5-50,000.
In the midst of the wreck it is n matter of general gratulation, and no less of surprise, that no losa of life, nor even personal injury has occurred. Mrs. Gwynn waa severely cut on thc head, yeaterday, and otherwiso injured, hy falling from a cart, iu wbich she was re¬ turning to ber ruiued bome, but is doing well undcr lhe kind care of the college people.
THE LATEST FEOM FOWLER, THE DE- FAULTES. The Baltimore Commercial Adi'crliscr of the 7lh says:—AVe are in receipt of a letter dated Havana, Juue 28, which states that he was tben in that tiity, and had been there aince a few days after his diaappearauce from New York. He arrived aud landed with a passport, under the assumed name of Post, but bas since been introduced to the Captain-General under the name of Fowler, who consented to tbe change on the resister, and he now passes under his own name. He is very communica¬ tive, and says he has not a dollar in the world except S28U0, which his friends handed him lo enable bim to escape. He professes tobave received a leiter from ex-President Pierce, from whom he received the appointment of Postmaster at New York, sympathising with bim in bis " misfortunes," and authorizing bim to draw on him for SoOO at once. Other friends have also come forward to hia assist¬ ance, and he expects that the wbole amount of his defalcation—St'S.OOO—will bo raised by them and paid over to the Government.
AN AMEEICAN VIDOCQ. One Natbnu Maroney has been convicted at Montgomery, Alabama, of robberies committed upon Adams' Express Company, of which be waa agent, to fbe amount of 853,000. He plan¬ ned his rogueries so adroitly and secured bis spoil so successfully that, altbougb suspected nnd discharged, it took ten months of constant surveillnnco by a skillful detective aud a most ingeniously contrived series of plots to get proof against bim, and to recover thc money. These are iu part detailed by the New Orleans Picayune. Alleu Pinkerton, a celebrated Chi¬ cago detective, was sent, for. and thc whole matler placed in his" bands. The rogue aud his accomplide. a woman, were huuted back¬ ward aud forward through a circuit of thouaanda of miles of travel, and every movement noted. Spies were act about them iu their most confi- dcuiiiil hours; tbcir intimates were pressed iuio the service againsl tbem; and finally a dcicc- live was brought into contact with the rogue, under such circumstances as io gain Iua confi- ilencc, be accepted as n counselloi-, and obtain actual possession of thc money in trn.si.— Maroney used SHl.OOO of the money t'> buy cotlon with, and $4U,0UU was sent to Texas undcr a fieiiiioua name, whence it was removed toNaichez, ihence to Montgomciy by Maroney, tind finally to Jcnkintown, Pa., by the woman. All her movemeuts, from Montgomery thither andbackagaiu, were supervised, hour by bour. This ageut succeeded in gnining his confidence, learued the whereabouts of the money, and got all the information desired. Capture of a Band of Ontlaws—The Gold Dia-
ooveriea in AriEona.
Trom the St. Lonl* Democrat, Jnly 6.
Mr. W. A. Wallace, one of the editors of the Alta California, arrived in our city last evening from Saij Franciaco, having come by the Butterfield Overland Mail Route. In eon¬ aequence of sickness he was obliged to quit tbo stages at Fort Smith, and is consequently four days behind the mail. To him we are indebted for the following highly important and interesting way-news, which has not be¬ fore been communicated to the Press:
The.agents of the Overland Mail Company have succeeded iu breakiug up a formidable band of robbers and thieves ou tbo Colorado and Gila Rivers. Tbis section has been a place of refuge for fugitive villaius for a loug time, and tbeir numbera bave beretofore given them impunity from arreat. Many robberies have been perpetrated upou individuals, aud also upou tbe Company. On a recent occaaion one hundred sacks of barley, wortb at tbat point twelve cents a pound, were carried off; animals also were stolen. The intentions of the band, however, were growiug too sanguine fur all of them. A plan waa laid to rob the mail and paaaengers, nnd also the ageut of the road. Before it was accomplished one of the band revealed the plot to Mr. Stevens, agent at tbe Colorada, and he, with Messrs. .lacobs and laeger, took immediate steps to break up thc gang.
On tbe 13th ult. tbree men were arrested and choked by a hangman's noose, from the lower branch of a mesquit until they confeaaed Crimea, namea and numbers, witb necks black from the compression of the rope. They were ironed, and sent under escort to San Diego for trial. Tbey were men for whom rewards were still advertised, as escaped fugitives from the courta of that county.
The next day two others, baving a lorking place dowu tbe river, were arreated. and after confession were ordered to leave the countiy at an hour's notice, which they were only too glad to do.
Tbe revelations located members of the band all along the road as far aa Teuron, where the leader, a bold, bad man, escaped from justice in' Los Angeles, remained. Measrs. Stearns and Jacobs came up to Tueron, arrested Jen¬ kins and Phelps, and took them back in irons to tbe Colorado. At tbe IMrao villages Jen¬ kins managed to escape into tlie thicket lhat borders tbe river, but the ludians. SIX) in nnmber, turned out with sticks, surrounded tbc thicket, and drawing a circle, soou caught bim, and be was sent on for trial.
Two other bad men were arrested at tbe Ferry—Reur. Leroy, and Charley Kalhburn— making ten in all, eight of whom were sent to San Diego for trial. There was great excite¬ ment among all the bad characters tbere, but the promptness of Slearns and Jacoba so as¬ tonished tbera that they made no attempt to rescue tbeir associates.
Tbe recent discovery of gold in the moun¬ tains, between the Gillfl and I\Iimbns rivers, is creating imraense escitoraeut through all the country. Hundreds of men and many women were passed on the road in all sorts of conveyances, Some of the towns on the Rio Grande were nearly depopulated. It was said tbat wheu tbe last stage came tlirough, not more than forty men wero remaining in El Paso. The employees of the Overland Mail Conipany. at mauy ofthe stations, have given notice of tlieir intention to quit tbe service and follow the crowd.
Tiie country is undoubtedly rich iu gold.— AA''e conversed witb geutlemen wbo had visited the mines, aod intend returning. Extraordi¬ nary good luck has attended the labors of many. The location of the mines is betweeu the foot of the Gila and JMimbua rivers, about six milesfrom either stream, and about thirty miles north of the stage road. The Mimbua is a amall affluent of the Gila, a hundred miles west of thc town of Mespilla, and one hun¬ dred and forty miles from El Paso.
On the 18tb ult., a band of 25 Camanches attacked tbe station at thc "Head of Concho," 100 miles east of tbe "Pecos Crossing," kil¬ led tbc keeper, Mr. J. AV. Sheppard, scalped him, and run off all tbe stock, eleven mules. The stage was delayed some hours for other animals to be brought iu. Mr. Sheppard kil¬ led one Indian, the cbief of the party, before be fell. He was a native of New Hampshire, but was recently from Kansas, wbere hehas a wife and three children now residing near Lecompton.
At the Clear Fork of the Brazos river, about tbe 20th inst., Capt. Baylbr, a Texan Ranger, very foud of Indian sports, returned from a Camanche bunt, bringing uiue scalps and forty horses. Hc asserted that be killed fif¬ teeu oftbe enemy, but was only able to secure nine scalps. His party consisted of six men.
On Tuesday moruiug, 3d inst., at daylighl, tbe Overlaud jMnil station, 22 miles east of S3*racuse, was burnt. Four borses—one of thc finest teams ou lhe road—periahed in tbe flames. The cause of tbe fire was unknowu, but was supposed to have originated in a matcb having been dropped upon thc ground, and ignited b3' being trodden upon by thc borses.

THE AHCTIC EXPEDITION—TtCEIR FAHE- AVELL.
Tbe ai'ctic expedition, undcr command of the gallaut Dr. .1. 1. Hayes, bade the citizens of Hoston a last farewell, on the otb inst., aud arc uow ou their way to the inhospitable shores of the Arctic regions. The many friends iu Cbesler county, of lhe intrepid Arctic explor¬ er, Dr. Hayes, will be rejoiced to learn that he leaves our shores well equipped for the under¬ taking before hira. The expedition will be absent at least two years. On the occasion of thc fareweU, tbe company was addressed by Gov. Banks, and in reply, Dr. Hayes said be knew too well the importance of this meeting to attrlbulc it to mere formfllily. He was about to loave these shores to endeavor to ac¬ complish discoveries begun by his predecessor. He could but thank bis countrymen for the generoua aid extended him, and would ever strive to prove worthy of the confidence repo¬ sed in bim. He should ever cherish tbe re¬ membrance of the bearty encouragement hc bad received from his frieuds here and else¬ where. He spoke of the usefulness and practicability of tbe enterju'lse—the interest felt in it by men of science—and the import¬ ance of studyiug tbe physical featurea of the globe—ita tides and ita currents, of sea and air—ita phenomena of magnciism, heat and electricity—and tbe varieties of living beings which bave inhabited it from tbe remotest geological epoch.
Hon. Edward Everett alluded to the previous speakers aa representing the Gommonwealtb, the City, the University and science, and said he could not decline to add his hearty wishes for tbe explorer's succesa.
Though the expedition seemed amall and tbe outfit meagre, amaller tban be could bave wished, yet it was better fitted tban were the vessels of Columbua, when he sailed to discov¬ er thia continent of ours. He went forth witb¬ out the light of science, surrounded by superstitious meu and with everything to contend against. Now wc have thc light of science, tbe benefit of former experience, and tbe result of other explorations. It ia said, that in the vocabulary of a reaolutc man there is no auch word aa "impossible." ~"
It may be His will and your good fortune to reacb the sea whicb we all believe exiats, where no flag bas yet floated, and no keel has yet been borne. Ifyou succeed, you will en¬ roll your uame and the names ofyour gallant compauiona on tbe list of noble discoverers, not only of early years, but with tbe resolute and undaunted explorers of tbe regions you now go to visit, and whose names arc familliar to us all. If you fail, you will have the con¬ solation of having it said of you, as of the youtb who dared attempt to drive the chariot of the Sun :—
" Slagnis tamen oicidit ansis."
He failed in a bold adventure.
Mr. Everett concluded by wishing that prosperous breezes might blow wherever the voyagers might be—that tho noble object sought might be gained.
EXCITEHENT IN SUITHFIELD S. I.
A correspondent of the Providence Journal says that much excitement exists in Smithfield, 11. I., connected with thc recent decease of a wealthy genlleman of that place. Tiic decea¬ sed left two children, one of whom was some¬ what estranged from him. He died suddeuiy, anti anxiety was fell by the absent one to know all (hal might be kuown concerning the sirauge death of her fatber, nnd overtures were made lo bave an examiuntiou into the cause of bis death. Thc.«c were repulsed with .*^ucli ten¬ acity that suspicion waa .aroused, nnd tlie dc- terniinaiioii made to have an iuveatigation before a coroner's jury. This was strongly opposed by those interested, aud aclivelj- sn bj' tbe family physician. The deaign was persevered in, bowever, and physicians were called from anoiher town to make (he exami¬ nation.
AVhen the physicians arrived theywere tuken aside by one of the resident physicians, and after an hour's consultation, they reporled ihat tbey deemed an inquest uuueccssary, as there was probably uo gronnd for sua]>iciou. Tbis created much indignation auioug the peraons assembled, anda town meeting on thc subject, was threatened, when the body waa esposed nnd examined. The physicians appenrcil sur¬ prised at the result uf the examinatiou, and jiortions of tbe body were taken nw,ay for chemical analysis. There is much feeliug among the people in regard to fhe course pur¬ sued in the mailer, and they arc determined ou a thorough investigation.

This is a very singular and somewhat inco- berent story. It will be fully investigated by tbe authoiities.
The health of the bero of Snn Jacinto isrep- resented ns poor. The tough old soldier who bas braved an hundred battles, and defied the power of shot and shell to pull him down, can¬ not stand a Presidential nomination. Tbe old hero bas to succumb. .V Texan paper says: ** He now goes about on a crutch because of lameness in one of bis ankles." It will be a marvel if all tbe otber candidates i^e not prostrated before election time.
Pall of a Building at St. Joseph's, Miasouri. St. Lonis, Saturday, July 7. Tbe Democrat learns from lhe passengers from St. Joseph's that the new four-story building in that city, owned and occupied by Kove, jNlcCord & Co., wholesale grocers, fell at two o'clock yesterday, crusbing a frame build¬ ing adjoining, occupied by three families, killing nine of the ten occupants instantly, viz: Mrs. Boyce and ibroe children, Mr, and Mrs. Cogswell and four otbers, whose names were not ascertained. The building caught fire immediately afterwards, and the stock of Nove, McCord & Co. was consumed. 'The atore of Toatles & Farnligh wns also burned, togetber with their entire stock of boots and shoes. The total loss is estimated at 520,^0- Insurance unknown.
Washington dispatches also announce that arrangements have been concluded between tfae Post-office Department and Mr. Vaader- bilt_, for the transportation of tbe Pacific Mails, commencing on tbe lltb instant, and ending the 4th of next March; the compensa¬ tion to_ consists oftbe postages, and such com¬ pensation as Congress may be induced to make under the recommendation of tbe department.
A new progamme for tbe Mormons is indi¬ cated in WashingU>n dispatches. It ia now proposed that they shall emigrate to one of the East India islands, and reliable information is said to bave been received that they will do so. Tbe enterprise is to be carried out uuder tbe supervision of Capt. "Wnlter M. Gibson, wbo will be remembered as baving bepn im¬ prisoned for some years by the Butch authori¬ ties of one of the islands in question, and who has recently identified bimself with thc Mor¬ mon cause—it being at bis suggestion that Brigbam Voung proposed to the Government lo lake the Mormons lo Oceanica, if an ar¬ rangement could be mado by which tbey could be paid by Government for their improvements in Utab.
We bnve watched pretty closely tbe exchan¬ ges received at this office the past week, es¬ pecially those from tbe northern part of Illinois, southern part of Wisconsin, and eastern partof Iowa, and they all agree, tbat 80 far as beard, but little damage bas resulted to the wheat and other crops by the recent storms. In some cases, indeed, thewheatbas been thrown down, but not so as to seriously damage it. No signs of rust have appeared. Many oftbe papers, too, state tbat tbe wheat crop will be heavier than was a short time sinoe anUcipated, tbe beads having filled up better than they Beamed at an earHer time to promiae. So, then, the Croaker family may as well, on motion, adjourn sine die.
