St. Matthew's A.M.E.
Zion Church began in April
1957 when the Rev. Daniel
B. Matthews, a clergyman
from the Philadelphia Conference of the African
Methodist Episcopal Zion
Church, established a mission with six members in
Sewickley.
At first, services were
held in a log cabin situated
on the Marlatt property on
Centennial Avenue near
Broad Street. Later, ser-j
vices were moved to
another log building on
Walnut" Street. Fund raising efforts of the mission
members resulted in the
purchase of a plot of land at
Walnut and Thorn streets
in 1868. The current church
stands on that plot of land.
The Sewickley community is invited to the an-
niversery service as the
church expresses its
gratitude forbits-long*
existence. ;
