Negative number C-734; Caption reads: "The Williamsport Symphony orchestra, 60 performers, conducted by E. Hart Bugbee, will give its first public concert in the High school auditorium Thursday evening, May 20, at 8:15 o'clock. This organization, which was heard by many citizens at the Consistory convocation last January, when it made a most favorable impression, has rapidly improved not only in the quality of membership but of music. It now embraces the very best string players in Williamsport and vicinity, and in addition many of the best players on other instruments. The membership of the orchestra is as follows: First violins: H. Keller, K. Foulk, Miss B. Rothfuss, Miss E. Trapp, Miss E. Bates, W. Jacobs, R. DeWitt, B. Richards, C. Young, Miss M. Casner, H. Kaseman, A. Stopper, Miss M. Hart, W. Jordan. Second violins: V. Nierle, H. Bedaud, C. Housel, Miss E. Stopper, C. Fritz, R. Peters, E. Lloyd, Miss E. Long, L. Myers, M. Palmer, C. Myers, G. Maloney, F. Boyd. Viols: W. Creamer, F. Nierle, S. Sweigart, R. Allen, F. Creamer. Cellos: E. Merk, M. Neyhard, G. Furman, C. E. Hand. Contra bass: O. Stopper, W. Heebner, W. Metherol, H. Bubb. Oboe: M. Willi; flutes, C. Shields, H. Lyman; clarinets, N. Bernardi, W. Galleti; bassoon, C. Bussom; French horns: O. Labelle, H. MacIntire; trumpets, C. Meyer, M. Stopper; trombone, F. Staib, D. Harman, S. Wachtel; tuba, J. Snyder; Timpani: C. Fowler; side drum, M. Schneider; snare drum, G. Hammer. This orchestra was originally organized by Mr. Bugbee for the purpose of teaching en semble playing to his pupils on string instruments. After a while he conceived the idea of adding to the orchestra other players until he succeeded in effecting a practically complete instrumentation. At this juncture he discovered that the organization required support from some source or other, expenses from music and other things becoming considerable. He interested some of his players and they in turn interested musically inclined citizens. Finally players and contributors effected a temporary organization as follows: President, Edgar Munson; vice president, F. E. Manson; secretary and treasurer, S. J. McMullen; assistant, William Johnson; librarian, H. Kaseman; board of directors, Edgar Munson, F. E. Manson, S. J. McMullen, Dr. R. K. Rewalt, W. E. Creamer, Edward Lloyd, R. F. Allen, William Jordan and E. Hart Bugbee; business manager, Edgar Munson. Under its new organization the orchestra has been able to secure music of a high order, and through frequent rehearsal attained to a high standard of performance. Its playing has been pronounced by competent critics as "superior" for an amateur organization. Its programme for its first public concert will well demonstrate its capacity, one of the numbers being "The Surprise Symphony", another a Hungarian rhapsody. It is safe to predict that this concert will be a revelation to the music lovers of Williamsport, a revelation of the ability of home players to render music never attempted by purely local orchestras. There is already prospects [sic] of a large audience at this first concert." |
