Lycoming College President Dr . Harold Hutson awards flautist Elaine Shaffer an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree during the intermission of her January 12th Williamsport concert . Miss Shaffer grew up in Altoona and graduated from Williamsport High School . She studied at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia , receiving the Artist's Diploma in Flute in 1947 . She was a member of the Philadelphia Orchestra , the Houston Symphony , and the Kansas City Philharmonic , and performed as a soloist with nearly every major European orchestra .
