The eastern gateway to the Susquehanna University campus was named for Latimer Landes, an alumnus and member of the University's Board of Directors. In order to make room for the gateway, a tree dedicated by the class of 1888 was removed. On Homecoming Day in 1959, a plaque was dedicated in honor of the tree. Dr. John Woodruff, shown standing beside the plaque, was the last surviving member of the class of 1888.
