THE DEATH OF MRS. PETRIKEN RECALLS TRAGEDY
Her Husband Drank Poisoned Coffee Intended for President-Elect Buchanan,
DURING A DINNER AT WASHINGTON HOTEL
Mrs. Petriken Passes Away at Her Home in Muncy at the Age of Seventy-Six
The death of Mrs. Fannie B. Petrikin, at her home on North Main street, yesterday morning, recalls the death of her husband, the Hon. J.M.B. Petrikin, who died from the effects of poison intended for President Buchanan. He got a cup of coffee, which contained poison, and from the effects of it died before he could reach home, although he got as far as Harrisburg.
INAUGURATION TRAGEDY
Mr. Petrikin was a young man of prominence when James Buchanan was elected to the office of president of the United States. In March, 1857, he went to Washington to attend the inauguration of the Pennsylvania president. He stopped at the National hotel, where Mr. Buchanan had quarters. At dinner Mr. Petrikin was given a cup of coffee, which he drank, and was soon after taken deathly sick. It was found, too late to save his life, that the cause of his illness was poison which had been put in the coffee. He was put on board a train for this city, but only got as far as Harrisburg, when he died.
INTENDED FOR PRESIDENT
Much surprise was expressed that any one should attempt the life of the Muncy citizen, a man who had no enemies. The mystery was cleared when it was found that the poisoned coffee was intended for the incoming president. By some mistake it was given to the wrong man, and the life of the president was saved, but Mr. Petrikin paid the price of the president’s life with his own. Mrs. Petrikin has survived her husband many years. She died yesterday morning at her home, in this place. The cause of her death was a stroke of paralysis, which she suffered several days ago. Deceased was aged about seventy-six years. She is survived by three sons and one daughter, Charles, Williams and Adolphus and Mrs. E.A. Noble. The funeral is to be held on Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock from her late residence. The Rev. Thomas Kerr, pastor of the Presbyterian church at Muncy, will conduct the services. Interment will be made in Muncy cemetery.
