Description
This is a letter from James Graham to his mother from the Army of the James near Richmond , dated December 8 , 1864 . In this letter , James Graham writes to let her know that he is well and that he has drill every morning . He says that there have been orders sent the night before for his regiment to be ready for battle . The orders were rescinded , however , and his regiment returned to their quarters . He mentions that he has sent a letter to his sister Elisabeth as well . He writes that he receives soft bread , which he trades to the old soldiers for hard tack . He mentions that the firing of cannons is still occurring at Dutch Gap , [where Fort Brady has been constructed] and that many believe this will occur all winter . He thinks highly of his Captain , but that Captain Mohr [Capt . Thomas J . Moore] of Company A is not much liked by his men .
