Description
Letter sent by Judge Thomas White to his wife Catherine White from Philadelphia on January 30 , 1865 . Judge White writes that he has just arrived in Philadelphia after a frigid trip . He notes that he was in Baltimore and just missed seeing his son Harry , who had left the day before he arrived . Judge White has heard from Harry's friends , that Harry , who has decided to return to the Army after a long imprisionment by the Confederates , will be allowed to resign from his position whenever he wishes . Harry had asked Secretary of War Stanton to muster him out but Stanton advised him to resign instead . Governor Curtin also advised Harry to resign because as prisoner of war he had "suffered enough " and had enough "fame " already . Harry's friends think he will resign sooner rather than later . Thomas also reports that Harry's lecture in Harrisburg drew such a large audience that many others who wished to attend had to be turned away .
