Dear Mr. Carnegie?
Your good friend and ours, Mr. George
Lauder, recently presented to the Institute a portrait of William Pitt, First larl of Chatham, by William Hoare, It. A., purchased from the Peel collection. The significance of this gift lies in the fact that it is an original work by Hoare, which was in the Peel family for eighty and gt;ears, and is thus, through Mr. jauder's thoughtful and generous act, brought to the city named in honor of Pitt. I have had a fine negative of the portrait made, with a view of presenting a photogrsph from it to Mr. Lauder, and it has occurred to me that you also would be especially interested in having a copy of this photograph. I am sending it by express today, and trust that it will arrive safely.
Very sincerely yours,
(B-JM)
