A skateboard park is expected to be in operation by the end of this month in the parking lot behind the water works building on Maple Street. Donations for the project reached $18,000 several weeks ago and a $15,000 order for the needed equipment was placed last week. “Local businesses really stepped up after that last article in the Record,” Lititz police officer Kerry Good said, referring to the “Who will buck up?” article on the front page of the May 3 Record Express. “I expect quite a few kids to be using it.” The park, which is a temporary location while police search for a permanent lot, will be open from dawn to dusk every day of the week. It will be a maintenance-free facility; and while police will be keeping an eye on things, the kids who skate there will be expected to be responsible for this golden opportunity. Good and fellow LPD officer, Sgt. Kerry Nye, began their skate park search effort over a year ago. Being on the front line of the skateboarding epidemic, Lititz police find themselves constantly scolding downtown skaters. i And they do so reluctantly. Sow sod Park board deals with expensive stormwater repairs STEPHEN SEEBER_________ Record Express Staff LITITZ — Flooding and storm runoff is costing the park. A $6,000 re-grade and re-sod project was completed Monday; and while the flow situation is greatly improved, more work may need to be done if the park board is to fend off pricey repairs in the future. A good chunk of the cost of this most recent work was donated by Jack Lange, owner of Lange Excavating on North Lane, who dug out about 25 years worth of silt between Park Lane and the creek in order to eliminate the lakes that have been typical in the park after notable precipitation. Lange said that silt build-up, compounded by surrounding land development and the lack of storm drainage in the park, has created a dilemma that the park board may have to face for years to come. B m i m t h H o m e Lititz to celebrate 225th 4th RICHARD REITZ___________ Record Express Editor LITITZ — This July 4th marks the 225th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and Lititz is planning to pay tribute to that milestone with a spectacular four-day celebration. Ronald Reedy, chairman of the 189th annual Fourth of July in Lititz Springs Park, said the theme of this year’s celebration, “Lighting Freedom’s Flame,” honors America’s 225th birthday — an anniversary that he feels has been curiously unheralded this year. Beginning July 1, the Borough of Lititz will correct that oversight, with plans that include timeless traditions such as the Grand Illumination of Candles and the High Tech Fireworks Show; to the new traditions^pke the Baby Parade and Family Day in the Park; as well as new programs, including a re-enactment of the Revolutionary War Hospital at Lititz Moravian Church.
