Perhaps he thought so himseif. He had not been returned flye minuteB when Bessie's messenger arrived. " A note from Misa Bessie." '^Indeed,'' said the young merchant, gra¬ ciously. *'Give it to me." Not a little disturbed at this summons, wlllch Ihoroughly mystified him, Frederic Mordaunt, leaving business to take care of itself, hastily returned to the house which he had just quitted. Ife was shown without delay into the presence of Bessie. RITNNING THE BLOCKADE, "la Miss Bessie iu ?'" *'Vcs, sir.'' Without further qaestion the speaker en¬ tered the honse with the air of an accustomed visitor. The room iuto which he was ushered waa furnished with;a degree of elegance whch betokened alike wealth and good taste. The young man threw himself upon a aofa, and taking from his pocket a telegramjust receiv¬ ed, read it with sparkling eyes." Certainly it must have contained goodnewa, lo judge by the expression of hig faoe. Ee was in¬ terrupted in his occupation by a sof', band upon hia shoulder. " Sir. Mordaunt, I protest against your converting my drawing-room into an otlice. Is your letter, then, of absorbing interest ?" "I beg your pordon, Bessie," said the yonng man, coloring slightly ; you entered so softly that I did not hear you.*' "Is that all you have to say to me?" in¬ quired the young lady, playfully. " I begin lo think it was scarcely worth while to come down." "No, Bessie," said theyoung man, taking her baud. " it is not all I have to say to you. I have come to ask you to reconsider your decision postponing our marriage for six months. What good reaaon is there for it. ?" " It is my guardian's wish, Frederic," said Bessie, gravely. "Bethinks I am so young that wc can well afford to wait. After all this 13 but a short time. Six months will pass away quickly." "Toyou, perhaps," returned the lover, half reproachfully. *'And why not?" she retorted, playfully. " For think, Frederic, they are the last six months of my independence. From that tirae I am to be subject to the whims and caprices of a husband. I am afraid they are all sad tyrants. On second thoughts, it would per¬ haps be better to name a yoar." " Would you have me commit euicide ?" "As ifyou were capable ofit,'' she restort- ed, laughing merrily. " You don't know what I am capable of," said young Mordaunt, shaking his head. "Perhaps if I did know I should be un¬ willing to marry you atall'* aaid Bessie, with a saucy smile. Frederic Mordaunt's face flushed slightly, aa if a sudden thought had crossed his mind, but a moment afterward he responded in the fl&me vein. Half an hour afterward the yonng man rose to go. Bessie Graham followed him to the door, and then with slow and meditative steps re-entered the drawing-room. As she pasaed the mirror a hasty glance was per¬ hapa natural. Rarely has mirror reflected back a more pleasing face or more graceful figute. Neither perhaps waa faultless, but the face had a wonderful power of expres¬ sion. A smile fairly lighted it up, leaving i it absolutely radiant. Yet there was some¬ thing about the mouth that smiled so sweet¬ ly which would have assured a careful ob¬ server that Mias Bessie had a will of her own when she chose to exert it. The eyes were clear and truthful. Purity and aincerity were reflected in these mirrors of the soul. Frederic Mordaunt was not the only one who had been won by ihe charms of the youug heiress. For Bessie wns an heirens, and a wealthy one. Not that she thought of it.— The two hundred thousand doilara which- constituted her fortune were a poor Bubsiitule in her eyes for the tender love of her father who been snatched from her three yenrs since by a sudden distemper. Bessie was about to leave tbe room when her attention waa auddenly drawn to a loose sheet of paper which lay on the oarpet at the foot of the sofa ou which her late viaitorhad been aitling. Picking it up, a glance inform¬ ed her that it was a telegram, and dated at Halifax. Her eyes rested upon ii a moment, and almost unconsciously she look in its con¬ tents. The blood rushed to her cheeks, and she exclaimed* impetuously, "Good hea¬ vens! can Frederic have acled so base a part?" The exjiression of her face was complelciy changed.' There whs a deep earnestness in her eyes, but lately sparkling with a iiierry light. "This must be intjuired into- without delay," ahe resolved. "If it be as I sus¬ pect, all is over belween UB. Ye«," ahe re¬ peated, in a slow and resolute tone, *' hence¬ forth and forever all is over between tis." Bhe wrote two lines upon n. sheet of note paper, and ringing the bell hastily, said to ^he sprvaftt -who anawered her summons, " Do you know Mr. Mordaunt's office ?" " Yes, Miss Bessie," " Ton will convey thia note tbither imme¬ diately, and plnce it in his owu hand. If be is absent wait for him.*' "Yes, Miss Bessie." Mr. Mordaunt bad walked qnickly back t o hia'ofBce,-having-i'mpbrlanl business awaitr inghis'aLtention,. f^ewasayoung^mer^iaiit who had the reppt^tiop of great shrewdness in buaineas matters. Some said tliat he had iiever dbne.abettier.stroke bf bualneHS'Ihalu la BecuJrlng the affections of the'yonng heir^ I " I have an apology to make," Bes.iie con¬ tinued, in the same cold tone. "Not aware ¦ lhat itwas of importance, I accidentally let my eye rest upon it.." I The young man's paleness was succeeded by a crimson flush, but he still remained si¬ lent. i " Frederic!" Bessie burst forth, in a chan¬ ged ton^, "is this dreadfulthing true? Have i you really been false to your country, and deliberately engaged in furnishing aid and ' comfort to the enem}'? I gather from, this telegram that, through au agent in Halifax, you have fitted out cargoes to run the block¬ ade.- Is this so V" The young man's eye quailed before her searching glance. "Forgive me, Bessie," he entreated, *? aud I will faithfully engage never again so to forget myself." •* Forgive you! It is not me you have offended, but your oountry." "I will givo half thf* proooods to tho .9lan- itary Commission; nay, the whole," said Frederic, deprecatingly. " That cannot repair the evil." " You are hard upon me, Bessie," said the young man, a little resentfully. "I am not the only one who has engaged in this busi¬ ness. It is wrong, I admit, but it is not the worst thing a man can do." " Very nearly," returned Bessie, gravely. "Listen, Frederic Mordaunt^" she continued, rising, and looking down upon him like an accusing angel. "Three months ago word oame to me that a cousin, who was my early play-fellow and always dear to me, fell upon the battle-field fighting bravely. Do you think, iu my sorrow for him, that I have not I remembered with indignation those who cau¬ sed and who perpetuate this unhappy war? Yet I could almoat envy him his fate. He never proved recreant lo honor and false to his country. His memory will ever be held sacred in my heart. Think, Frederic Mon- daunt, how many thousands have fallen like him-^how many a heart^las been made deso¬ late—how many a fireside is wrapped in sad¬ ness." " That is true; but am Iresponaible for all this?" "Their blood is upon.your hands, Fred- eriy Mordaunt," s&idBeasie, sternly. " You, and auch as you, who betray^your country for a little paltry gain—who furnish the reb-* els with the means of prolonging their un¬ righteous contest—are guilty of all the extra blood-shed aud suffering whioh must neoes- sarily result. Shame on you, Frederic Mor¬ daunt! And you call youvaelf loyal! Ihave more respect for amopen enemy than for a secret traitor." " Bessie," said the young man, thorough¬ ly humiliated, "I will not seek to defend my¬ self. 1 will make any reparation that you may require. Only do not be too hard upon me." " I hope you will iqake auch reparation as your conscience esacta. For me, I wUl °ot veuiure to dictate. You are not responsible to me any farther than you are to all who have the welfare of their couptry at heart." "Surely yea," said the young man, hia heart sinking with a new apprehension.— "The relation between us will justify yon in any demand. You have only to express your ¦ wishes." " The relalion to whioh you refer has oeas- ed," said Beaaie, coldly. "I give you back yonr promise." "You cannot mean if," said young Mor. daunt, in accents of earnest entreaty. " Say that you do not mean it." " It is beat so,*' said Bessie. " I was mis¬ taken in you. I thought you a man of the strictest honor. I did not think—. Butwhat need lo proceed ? Providence has willed that my eyes should be opened. Let the paat he<| forgotten." " Do not csat mc off without a moment's reflection," urged Frederic, more and more desperately. " Give me time, and 1 will sat¬ isfy you of my sincere repentance." "I heartily hope you will, Frederic. The interest that I have felt in you will not per¬ mit me to say less. But if you have a thought that any change which time will bring will shake my resolution, put it away at once. Where I have once lost my respect I can no longer love. Within the last hour the whole plan of my life seema to have changed. My love for you haa gone, never to returu. U is best that you should know it. I sincerely hope that you may awaken to a full senae of the diagrace in which you hove involved yourself, and may seek as far as possible to repair it. Should such be the case, my good opinion of you may in time be reatored. Do not aeek for more." , Frederic Mordaunt took his hat slowly, and left the room. He felt that it would be useless lo urge his suit further. There waa that in the expression and tone of Bessie Graham which warned him that it would bo in vain. Kven in that hour, perhapa, the loss of the fortune which the heiress would have brought him waa not the least bitter ingredient in his cup of humiliation. Yes, even in a pecuniary view, hia speculation had failed miserably. He hnd gained five tliousand dollars and lost two hundred thou¬ aand. As fur Bessie, ahe did not grieve much for llm" lover she ha4 dismiase4. It was aa she had said. All her love for him had passed away when she awoke to a sense of his un- worthiuess. She haa firmly resolved that whenever her hand ia given, it ahall be to one who has devoted himself heart and hand to the service of his country. Writes an enthusiastic yoting cavalier after a glorioua dash of a few hundred mtles through the enemy's country in Miaaiaaippi: "Solomon in all hfs glory was never ona raid like one of these."'
