Qaurargo Pa. 3/8,1887 Mr. Kern Dear Sir; It struck me very forcible this afternoon that I had a debt to pay, said debt being a letter so I will now try and square accounts. Is your school done yet? I had a chance to teach here for a month, beginning last Mon. and I wish I had taken it I would have gotten 37 1/2 dollars for my trouble, which would have been considerable better than I get here. I am leaving here on Thur 29th. The new clerk came yesterday. I expect to be at home next summer and think I shall teach next winter. My bro starts for Kansas this week sometime. I thought very seriously of going with him, but my mother did not want me to go. She said one was enough to go so far from home. I am itching to go west. If my bro settles out there then I will go for certain. I hear from Bahn about a week ago. He says hi! Has a good position in the railroad office at his place. John W. Thomas is in next summers class and some others that attended the Normal where you and I did ever tell you we had a telegraph line here about a mile and a half long between our two stores. I am telegraph operator at this end. I learn it very well it isn't so hard after you get started. I guess I'll close I must write to Mauer tonight. Please let me hear from you again. Yours truly, E. B. Whitmer
