Orefield Jan. 28th, 1883 Dear son Samuel We have now prepared a box of apples for you besides containing a few other small articles which you will find enclosed we will send it off to morrow if the weather is fair enough so father can take it to Allentown, I would have fixed more for you with the greatest pleasure but you said you wanted nothing else, I will now tell you about the anniversary of Grandfather birthday. Theodore failed to come with the Glee Club but at about 8 o'clock in the evening the Siegersville Band came with some Twenty men and drank nearly all the cider the had besides eating about a half bushel of apples after the band had left Harvey Weller & Jonas Klein came. Harvey came for the purpose of seeing his mother but she and Elmer had left early in the afternoon because Charlie was sick that day, Theodore telegraphed again yesterday morning that he was a coming with the Club last night and so the did come at a late hour, Grandmother had a turkey fixed for supper, we have been up and Clauser's family. We waited for then till after 8 o'clock but have arrived, then we went to work carved up the turkey and commenced to eat and as soon as each of us had a piece of turkey Theodore opened the door and had seven more men remaining on the sleigh which commenced singing before the entered the house them are nice singers. On Tuesday evening Franklin Sieger from Allentown with all his shop hands was at our house. Sleighing has been very good for some time, but I only had a few rides as yet your father is out most all the time on business so I have to stay at home for nobody else is here, perhaps when Willoughby gets back I might get some more we had not heard anything about him since he left. The pictures you wanted me can not send you for this time Theodore has not returned it yet, I asked him last night whether he received your letter or not he said he received it but not answered it yet. I will now draw to a close for this time hoping these few lines will find you in the same state of health as the left all of us. I remain as ever you mother Amanda S. Kern Hoping to hear from you soon.
