She was a straige woman to manage. That she appreciated my kindness was xory evident; but no argument that I could use was sufficient to induce her to sit with me of an evening in the parlor or library. She was my dressmake—that she was very anxious to impress upon my mind, much to my annoyance. The only way I could ever get her to ride with me was to invent some excuse for shopping, and instruct the coachman to drive to the park afterward. At such times, although certain she was made happy by the change, yet there seemed to be always something'oppressing her. Once T said, pushing her gently back among the cushions, "I wish vou would try aud enjoy this, and get all the good out of it you possibly can. See what a good time little Maud is liavin'v' (That was her biby's name.)" Hints on Shopping. h sVSTAHlv, I J. ATTORNEY AT LAW, PITTSTON, PBNN'A I 4 M M P I C. W. FREEMAN, The morning blooms on the frosty heights, Oath'ring the mists in kin golden hands, And slowly to view in the rosy lights Ihe shadowy scene, like a dream, expands* It i* poor economy—or, rather, no economy at all—to purchase inferior fabrics because they are cheap. Per- HAVINGS BANK, MINERS' In the midst of my reverie the coachman appeared, saying " This is the house, madam;" and I louud tb't I had rolled into a quiet, clean street, and had stopped before a plain two-story frame house, bearing the number I was in search of. A wholesome, motherly-looking woman opened the door, and in answer to my call lor Mrs. Andrews directed me up stairs to the "■second story, front," and there 1 found her. 1 wish I could give you C vena slight idea of the figure that greeted :ny eye as 1 entered the room. She was about medium height, with a slender, graceful— wondrously graceful—figure. I thought then, and I say now, that she was the most beautiful woman I ever beheld. Such exceding symmetry of face and form is hardly met with more than once in a lifetime. It is no use to attempt a description. Iler eyes were dark blue, veiled by long, sweeping lashes, adding to the look of patient sadne-s expressed in every feature. She looked about, twenty, though I found afterward that she was something older than this. ilfpj mm DEALER IN O f 2T# lttstou. EAGLE DRUG STORE! SAYINGS BANK sons in limited circumstances olten commit this error. If a calico at ten cents a yard looks about as well as one at twelve or fifteen cents, the prudent purchaser will often think it economy to choose the low-priced good*. As it is low-priced, she may indulge in a yard or two more for ruffles or bias folds, flattering herself that cheap ornamentation is an equivalent for fine quality. This mistake may be seen permeating the entire wardrobe of many sensible people. The result is simply this: they never have anything of really good quality, are always shabby, and always buying. None but rich people can afford to buy poor goods. This rule applies to all sorl s of goods—muslins, cloths, carpets and .table linen. We grudge the time we see women spend in making up muslins of low grade for underclothing. There are so many stitches in a shirt! And when it lasts one year instead of two. as it should, there is just twice as much work done as need to be. Better make three shirts of fine quality muslin than six of a lower grade of muslin. Just so in flannels. A fifty-cent, all wool Shaker flannel will wear two or three times as loDg as your flimsy cotton and wool stuff a few pennies cheaper. Especially in a family of children, fabri -s should be chosen for service, that when made up they may descend from one child to another, thus saving the mother time to stitch into her brain a little embroidery of thought and culture. A few rules with regard to shopping itself may be in place. First: have a list of artioh s to be purchased made out in black and white. By this means you will be saved from sudden temptation to buy what is not ready necessary, and forget nothing that you require. Second: Deal only with merchants in whose business integrity you can confide. Third : In the long run one always does better to bnv at one and the same place than run about for the purpose of hunting up bargains. A regular customer can often get favors denied ta an occasional pn - chaser. Fourth : Never buy what you don't want, simply because it is cheap. F. One writer gives the story of an aged priest, who told h.m that iu the year 1800 he was sent to a certain church in the West Riding to perform "the monthly duly;*' but that he was peremptorily warned away by the churchwarden's wife, who refused to have service performed that day because her turkey was sitting iu the pulpit. On another occasion in another church, the service was suspended because the farmer's wheat was stacked in the nave, and he had forgotten that it was church Sunday. A parish church at Heene was bit by bit allowed to fall into decay, and was finally pulled down because of its danger to pigs and sheep. The stone of tbis chapel was worked up into the adjoining buildings. John Rayne, Viear of Blvth, complains that there is a remnant of a Beneditiuo church near his own, which has been shamefully despoiled, the neighboring proprietor having carried off a bay of the nave and converted it into an aviary for parrots, cockatoos, and canaries. Here is something even worse.: At Crawford, in Middlesex, the church, as often happens, is situated in the - park. The following notice appeared at the gate : " The road is only public to the parish church for the performance of divine service, and persons trespassing at any other time will be prosecuted." And now, to wind up this paragraph, wo may mention that a clergyman aged 71, formerly rector of Alerstone, died lately from starvation, at Camden town, his landlady testifying that he had oniy tasted animal food once in the last two months ! Ii you could have seen him then, yon would have thought just as I did, that the fellow was going mad. He cleared that sofa with one bound ; and the next thing I knew my dress maker was in John Bittinger's arms. What did it all'mean ? you ask. Only this, that my brother was formerly in partnership with a Mr. Andrews. This Mr. Andrews was desperately in love with the lady John was engaged to. lie succeeded in parting the lovers, this very letter figuring conspicuously in the separation. This John (who, it seems, up to the time must have placed entire confidence in him) placed with others to mail upon his desk. Andrews must have withdrawn it—not being able just then to destroy—and mixed with other papers. This letter explained the whole situation, which Andrews had been for some time shrouding in mystery. At any rate, he made trouble enough ; and my dress maker married the wrong man, and the wrong man drank up all his money and died. PITTSTON, Pa. A few weeks ago, just as the East London Hospital for children and women was about to sell the stocks representing its only reserve „ fund, in order to raise money, this mysterious "H. G." deposited in a bank one thousand pounds to the credit of the institution, this being the third time that he has done the same thing, and always just at the moment when the hospital directors were most sorely embarrassed for funds with which to carry on their charitable work. They do not know who "H. G." is, and so they thank him through the newspaper's. "D. Can it be that any reason for this aversion has originated in her ?" John lay just whero I had left him on the lounge. With a sigh, which was almost a groan, she walked to his side, and said, "John I have just received your letter." Ii you could have seen him then, yon would have thought just as I did, that the fellow was going mad. I didn't ask any more question; and what was more, I firmly decided that my brother and his freaks were quite beneath my notice. But I did make ready for my dress maker, dedicating to her use as pleasant a room as I had in the house— one that I knew she would enjoy herself in when her day's work was done, and she had time to fold her baby to her heart and rock her to sleep, as I did mine, in the dim, beautiful, twilight. SCROLL SAWING OF ANY KIND DONE It was natural, I suppose, that I should speculate a little about this secret of John's —for that it was a secret I was quite sure by the way he dismissed me from his confidence; and so as I rode along to the street and number whert I was directed to find this wonderful dress-maker, who could fit without measurement and trim without patterns, I imagined all sorts of strange adventures for my brother, in which everything conceivable figured, pistols and coflce, etc.. etc.; in short, everything except love. That could never have befallen hiin, or I should have heard of it. True, John had been away from us for at least five years, and during a large poition of that time we had scaicely heard from him. It seemed to me that his principal business consisted in dodging this poor inoffensive little Mrs. Andrews.
