Yesterday afternoon abbut 6:30 o'clock, Fish was taken from' a saloon at 265 West Thirtyfourth street to Roosevelt hospital. He was in an unconscious condition from the effects of a fracture of the base of the skull. An operation was at once performed and every effort possible made by the most skillful physicians In the city to save the man's life, but he never recovered consciousness and breathed his last at 2:45 this morning in the hospital. The hospital physicians refused to make any detailed statement with regard to the case, on account of the fact that Fish was a private patient. The utmost mystery surrounds the affair. Brldgman, secretary of tbe Poury Arctic club, which furnished the means for the expedition to the north, has also received a telegram from Lieutenant R. E. Peary, duted Chateau Bay. In this dispatch Lieutenant Peary states that he is on his way homo on tho relief ship Windward and that all on board are well. Mr. Fish was a member of one of the oldest New York families. He was a son of Hamilton Fish, secretary of state under Grant. He was born In this city In 1848 and was graduated from Columbia college in 18G7. He took a law course at Harvard and for several years was In the diplomatic service of the government. St. Petersburg, Sept. 1G.—It Is announced that bids will soon he requested for supplying locomotives and other rolling stock for the Siberians and other railway lines in Central Asia. Washington, Sept. 16.—Navnl Constructor Richmond Pearson Hobson, who appeared before a retiring board a few months ago and failed to qualify for retirement, will be assigned to duty shortly by the navy department. He has been on sick leave since June 18. After having been rejected by the retiring board Mr. Hobson applied for three months' sick leave to allow Ills eyes, which, lie declared, had been much overtaxed and Impaired by the sun glare which attended his work of raising the sunken Spanish vessels, to recuperate. After the bank was broken Into the Florencevllle officers traced the men across the boundary line and secured help of the Houlton officers, who Intercepted the men eight miles north of here. Cincinnati, Sept. 10.—The police arc holding on a charge of loitering Joseph Schmltz, aged forty, until they can investigate a statement that he has threatened to take the life of President Roosevelt. Sclimltz was arrested Saturday on the complnint of two elderly Bisters, who said that he had entered their premises and Insisted on staying there. Yesterday afternoon abbut 6:30 o'clock, Fish was taken from' a saloon at 265 West Thirtyfourth street to Roosevelt hospital. He was in an unconscious condition from the effects of a fracture of the base of the skull. An operation was at once performed and every effort possible made by the most skillful physicians In the city to save the man's life, but he never recovered consciousness and breathed his last at 2:45 this morning in the hospital. Brldgman, secretary of tbe Poury Arctic club, which furnished the means for the expedition to the north, has also received a telegram from Lieutenant R. E. Peary, duted Chateau Bay. In this dispatch Lieutenant Peary states that he is on his way homo on tho relief ship Windward and that all on board are well. Mr. Fish was a member of one of the oldest New York families. He was a son of Hamilton Fish, secretary of state under Grant. He was born In this city In 1848 and was graduated from Columbia college in 18G7. He took a law course at Harvard and for several years was In the diplomatic service of the government. Washington, Sept. 16.—Navnl Constructor Richmond Pearson Hobson, who appeared before a retiring board a few months ago and failed to qualify for retirement, will be assigned to duty shortly by the navy department. He has been on sick leave since June 18. Sclimltz was arrested Saturday on the complnint of two elderly Bisters, who said that he had entered their premises and Insisted on staying there.
