Well, we both looked everywhere. We unpacked packages and peeped into boxes, and poked down cracks in tlit floor. Lilly kept worrying about getting a locksmith to tit another before she could pet in, and said that Rose was always so tired. Rose was her sister. The two were orphans, and kept house together in one little room of a very respectable tenement house. She looked at me and gave a great gulp. "Nasty little cat," she said; "1 won't!" But she did, and only I ever knew why the" Widow Wood was so generous to Lilly Rathbone on her wedding-day, or why she started for Europe on the very next steamer that sailed from New York, and still remams there. D., Proprietor, INTEREST PAID Ever and ever with outstretched hands We grasp for a golden morrow ; Ever and over the billows of time Are flighted with bitter sorrow. Ever and ever the lips smile on, That the world may walk in blindness ; little they know of the heart's wild woe, When the face looks but with kindness There are many young men who are in the habit of excusing their idleness and inefficiency with the plea that they can do nothing without capitaL The lack of means is the ready reply they make to every appeal to action. They imagine that they possess in themselves all the prerequisites to success but capital. If they only had capital, in addition to their other imagined virtues, they would do great things in the world, they would astonish the natives with the boldness and brilliancy of their enterprise. They would grow immensely rich, and then lay the world under perpetual obligations to their gratitude by the magnificence of their benefuctions. Thia is the way they think and talk, nnd they roll the vainglorious idea over in their minds until they j become to imagine that the world is an immense loser by their poverty. These persons forget one important fact- that all capital is the product of labor. That nearly all rich men in this country wer§ once poor. That nearly every personal fortune they can enumerate is either the product of its owner's tod and skill, or the representative of his father's toil and skill. BARRITT'S TIN SHOP! It's odd how we remember littje things sometimes. Perhaps the girl's pretty puzzled face, aud her graceful motions as she ran about looking fpr the key, impressed this on my mind. At all events we did not find the notched key tied with pink ribbon, and Lilly went home without it. I told Margaret Ann about it when I saw her next, and she iuquired very politely of Lilly as to the end of the affair, when slie next saw her. The key was never found, but Lilly said she had two made, so that such a thing could never happen again. She would keep one, and Rose the other. J JOWELL & KING But capital is not only indispensable to young men of the right stufl for ail this. There are other kinds of capital besides accumulated money ; brains, muscle, industry, honesty, diligence, truth, fidelity, skill, tact, educatipn—all these are capital, ami all of them have a commercial value, which the owner will be able, sooner or later, to command in the market. Provided with these, any young man in this country may make more than he reeds to spend every year, and thus have something at the end of each year to invest as money capital. If he needs money let him go to work and make it, and thus give proof of his ability to use it profitably and judiciously. If we go into any great city, or into any prosperous agricultural district, we find the capitalists are those who have made their fortunes without any outside aid. They did not waste their time in repining in their poverty, and in silly dreams of what they could do if they had the money to do it with. They went boldly and resolutely to work ; they toiled and thought and planned, and kept toiling and thinking and planning patiently, until at last they grasped the fortunate moment, and in nine cases out of ten they succeeded, Steel Pens, Gold Perns, Black, Bine, and Car- Successors to Rand, Ho*rell & King, CELEBRATED XX k XXXX ALES, Genuine Scotch and Brazilian Pebble Spectacles. And I laughed to myself, for I knew Margaret Ann was thinking of some one eke to flirt with. But I said nothing. It was fun to see her face change when she saw Lilly behind the counter nest day. And she gave it to me in the private office, I can tell you. She hated females about a store, and she did't like Lilly's looks. I could laugh at her, however there. 1 had good references with LUly, and 1 had signed a written agreement with her for six months. She was to be cashier, you see, as I told you. I arose to say goodnight, and came around the table to shake hands with Margaret Ann, when, being but a clumsy old bachelor, not used to woman's fixings, my coat caught in a little wicker work sewing basket on Ions; spider legs, and overset it. Out tumbled cotton and buttons and tape, and I stooped down to pick them up, when among the litter I saw a key—a brass door key, with a nick in it, and a long piece of pink ribbon tied to the hanlie. It was a very little thing, but it made my blood r«i cold If that was the key that LilJy had lost, what was it doing there ? I didn't dare to look at my sfeter-in law. And I walked the floor all nigfct, but by mornirig my mind was made up. At nine o'clock I met that boy and girl at the store and told them I should be out all day. In ten minutes more I stole Lilly 9 key from under the counter, and went out. I went to her house—to her little room on the third floor, and entered it like a thief. It was very poor and very bare, but vt ry neat and clean ; and there was a closet in it, with a few dresses hungup on pegs, and a bonnet box on a shelf. ° Into that closet I went, and there I sat down on an old trunk and waited. Ya., gives the following cases of Ihe destruction of sheep by dogs : Mr. H. W. Crittendon, living ih the neighborhood of Bipon, informs us of a raid made on his sheep by dogs. It seems that Mr. Crittendon, hearing a disturbance among his sheep, seized a doublebarreled shot-gun and hastened to the pen. On arriving there he found three voracious caniues engaged in the work of slaughter, and although one barrel of the gun missed, fire, killed one of the dogs with the other, and despatched a second with a fence rail, the third making his escape. On the examination of his flock six sheep were" found killed outright, and the remainder so injured that his loss is estimated at at least S100—but one sheep remained uninjured. Surely such losses as those deserve some consideration at the hands of our Legislature, and as we have heretofore expressed, we trust the remedy wili be appliod, and that speedily, in the way of an onerous tax upon dogs. Mr. C. informs us that he has made a summary calculation, and finds that on eight farms within a small radius, in his immediate neighborhood, there are forty dogs. At this rate dogs will be inore plentiful than sheep. Let the remedy be applied. WHOLESALE GROCERS. OYSTERS, I. Souie aged inhabitants of the city of Munich, Germany, still remember a woman -who need to be called " Die Beterin an der Mnriensnule," because sbe used to pass the whole of every day in silent, motionless prayer before the Virgin's image. No rain, or storm, or cola, or entreaties could drag her away; when spoken to she only wept and said. " My child, my child !" King Ludwig I. took an interest in this woman, and her story was found to be thatin early life f-he had been a peasant in the neighborhood, who had a lover, but they were too poor to marry. One night the Virgin appeared to heriu a dream, and a neighbor found in the circumstance some hint as to a number in a lottery. The girl purchased this number and drew a thousand florins. But then her lover was drafted for the war, and she had to pay four hnlidred florins to get him off. The other six hundred were taken by her father's creditors. Some years after she found at the foot of a Virgin, when praying, eighteen hundred gnldeu. The yoting people then married, but two or three dnys after the husband was taken away for another war. In his absence she bore a son. Once again the husband returned, but only to be immediately recalled to tight against Russia. Going to see him eft with her child, poor Adelaide was knocked down by a carriage, and her foot crushed. Worse than all, her Child was lost. She never saw her husband or child again, though she heard of her child as having got into a soldier's wagon, and being adopted by an officer going to Russia. The poor woman actually wandered to B issia, whence she came back broken-hearted, to pass her days before the imap• of the Virgin, who had twice given her gold but could not restore her child. Through the sympathy of the king, her last days were made as comfortable as possible. She diejfc in 1834 in a hospital. Meals or at all hows. Oct. 26, 71-ly. j. t. CB0FT7T. OILS. Oct. 26, 71-ly. j. t. CB0FT7T. OILS.
