Washington, Oct. 5.—Additional details of the horrible massacre of American soldiers at Halangiga, iu the Island of Sainar, w-ere received last night at the war department In a cable dispatch from General Chaffee at Manila. General Chaffee's dispatch la made up of reports received by liiin front General Hughes, who transmitted a report from Lieutenant James F. They confirm previous reports of the death of Cap tain Council, Lieutenant liuinpus and Surgeon Griswold of Company C, Kia tloueti at Balaugiga, and tell such a tale of treachery as removes all ground for criticism that proper military precaution had not been taken by the olii cer lu command. It shows that even the presidente of the town, whom the soldiers had every reason to consider frlendly, led the attacking party which gained access to the convent iu which the officers were quartered. It Appears from Lieutenant Druillard's report that the men while at breakfast were taken completely by surprise by an attacking force which gained possession of the soldiers' arms. A terrible hand to hand struggle, took place in the messroom, resultlug in the death of many of the soldiers. The enemy were beaten off temporarily, however, by twenty-live men who gained their rifles, and Sergeant Betron, assuming command, endeavored to collect the men preparatory to a retreat from the island in boats. Exports have increased, but are still small, for the week only 843,374 bushels going out from Atlantic ports against 2,144.010 bushels last year and 2,002,282 lu 1890. Wheat was also easier. The great size of the domestic wheat crop this year is Indicated by interior receipts of 8,411,773 bushels against 0,130,084 last year and 6,044,- 113 in 1800. Cotton was easier until the ottlcial report appeared, when the low coudltlon caused a sharp advance.
