Unless Matthew Stanley Quay should withdraw from the field there Is little doubt that he will be elected United States senator soon after the new legialatnre meets next January. Of the 204 members of the house «Df representatives the Democrats elected only 47, while the anti-Quay Republicans number about 40. ine remainder are Quay men. in rae senate, composed of 50 members, the Qnayites say they hare axbare majority. The figures of General Reeder, which are conservative, give Senator Quay 142 votes on joint ballot. It takes 128 votes to elect and on these figures his majority would be fourteen in joint session. At the last session Senator Quay lacked thirty-five votes of a majority on the final vote cast.
