New York, Jan. 5, 1801, 1 he clock was struck in this way; The dial is some twenty feet from the floor, and on each side of whioh is a cherub or little boy with a mallet, and over the dial is a small bell. The chtrub on the left strikes the first quarter, that on the right the second quarter. Some fifty feet above the dial, in a large nidhe, is a huge figure of Time, a bell in hi* left, a soythe in his right hand. In front stands the figure of a young man with a mallet, who strikes the third quarter on ths bell in the hand of Time, and then turns and glides, with a slow step, round behind Time : and then oomes out an old man with a mallet and places himself in front. As the hour of twelve comes, the old man raises his mallet and deliberately strikes twelve times on the bell, that echoes through the building, and is heard all aroand through the region of the church. The old uian gfides behind father Time, and the young man oomes around again. As soon as the old man has struek twelve and disappeared another set of machinery is pat in motion, some twenty feet higher still. It is thus : There is a high cross with the image of Christ. The instant twelve is struck, one of the Apostles walks from behind, comes in front, turns facing the cross, bows, and walkes on around to his place. As he does so another comes in front, turns, bows and passes in. 8j twe'ri Apostles, figure as large as life, walk round, bow and puss on. Aa the list appears, an enormous cock, perched on the pinnacle of the clock, slowly flaps its wings, puts forth ita neck, and crows three times, so loud as to be heard outaide the ohnroh for some distance, and so natural as to be mistaken for a cock. From Dickens' Onee a Week. April 20, 186My DIRECTORS There was onee a wise emperor who j made a law that to every stranger who came to his court a fried fish should be served. The servants were directed to take notice if, when the stranger had eaten the fish to the bone on one side, he turned it over and began on the other side. If he did, he was to be immediately seized and on the third day thereafter he was to be put to death. But, by a great stretch of imperial clemency, the culprit was permitted to ut cr one wish each day, which the emperor pledged himself to grant, provided it was not to spare his life. Many had already perished in eonfequence of this edict, when, one day, aeount and bis young son presented themselves at court. The fish was terved as usual, and when the count had removed all the fish from one side, he turned it over, and was about to commence on the other, when he was suddenly seized and thrown into prison, and was told of his approaching doom. Sorrow-stricken, the count's young son besought the emperor to allow him to die in the room of his father; a favor whieh the monarch was pleased to aeoord him. The count was accordingly released from prison and the son was thrown into his cell in his stead. As soon as this had been done, the young man said to his gaolers: " You know I have the right to make throe demands before I die; go and tell the emperor to send me his daughter, and a priest to marry us." The first demand was not much to the emperor's taste, neveftheless ho felt bound to keep his word, and he therefore complied with the request, to which the princess had.no kind of objeotioo. This occurred in the times when kings kept their treasures in a eave, or in a tower set apart for the purpose, and on the second day of his imprisonment, the young man demanded the king's treasures. If his first demand was a bold one, the second was not less so; still an emperor's word is stored, and having made the premise, he was forced to keep it; and the treasures of gold and silver and jewels were placed at the prisoner's disposal. On 1 getting possession of them, he distributed them profusely among the courtiers, and soon he had made a mat of Meads by hie liberality. near Street, nxt door to Dr. Dorr §. JOB PRINTING, W.P. They joyed—but the tongue of their gladness is dumb. Then all is still as death. No wonder this olook is the admiration of Europe. FIRE INSURANCE COMPANY, NEW YORK, ASSETTS $005,500 Ob ! why should the spirit of mortal be prond ? The Three Wishes. Anhrkw J. fluiTH, ) Secretary. J f Wm. Pitt Palmer, ( President.
