The only happenings in the trouble at Femwood colliery of the Hillside Coal & Iron Co., the employes of which went on strike last Wednesday, fcre that the U. M. W. of A. has entirely washed its hpnds of the matter and that a committee of the employes waited on Captain May this morning nnd will make a report of their inter- View this evening at a meeting of the men. The strike was caused on account of the' refusal of miners to do an additional task without extra pay and when the trouble was brought to the attention of the union offllcials they, investigated it and found that very few of the miners or other employes were affiliated with the union so they decided to take no action whatever In the matter. Several of the officials of the union were in town yesterday in connection with the trouble. A meeting -of the employes was called yesterday afternoon and a committee was appointed to* go to Dun-more for the purpose of holding a conference with Captain May. The following men were on the committee, which left for Dunmora this morning: Michael Mulcahey, Pat" rick Mulcahey, John Keating. Charles Rfiose, Jose Greek and Anthony Vizzery. None of the employes turned out for work this morning so the colliery is still idle. (Wilkesbarre Record.) Last night at 11:30 o'clock when the firemen responded to an alarm they found the Laurel Line station on East Market stree# apparently a mass ot flames. It was found that the most of the Are seemed to be issuing from the express car No. 201, which stood on the track beside the station waiting to be taken out during the night, and that the flames had communicated to the roof of the train shed along which it stood. Chemical engine No. 2 did some good work in checkings the the progress of the flanjes on the roof until the water could be turned on, when the flames were quickly subdued. The fire which a few moments before looked as though it might be a conflagration, was almost immediately checked. The attention oi tte department was then turned to the car and the doors were broken in and a stream of water was turned on inside. The smoke was so dense in the interior of the car that it was not until some minutes later that the fire was out in the car. None of tho furnishings or contents of the car escaped damage. The cause of the fire remains a mystery. It was filled with mattresses, underwear, flour and a number of other miscellaneous articles, but nothing could be found that would suggest an explosion of any kind. The mattresses and some flour were almost totally destroyed by fire and water and the underwear was alto damaged to some extent by the water. The roof and interior of the car are badly burned. The under side of the roof of the train shed is badly scorched and the trolley trestling nearby also sustained slight damage. 52 Inch High Lustre Brilliantin®, black, navy, brown, good value at 75c; special price 50c a yard. London, Oct. 28. — Cleared for action, an overwhelming British fleet now is gathering directly in the eastward course of the Russian Baltic squadron. Dispatches from different points in the Mediterranean this afternoon all gave proof of the government's preparation for the likely resort" to war. From Malta, Tangier, Flume and Pola English warships sailed on urgent orders from the admiralty. All the ships laid a course in the direction of Gibraltar, and. although no official announcement has been made, it is generally understood that the ships are on the way to join the channel squadron, which are cleared for action in the shadow of the Hock of Gibraltar. | "I tell you, boys, after C[ running around all day, you j j sit down and drink a glass J 5 of Stegmaiers' . Now, there was not a single torpedo boat near the detachment. and none was left behind. Consequently the vessel remaining near the small steamboats was that torpedo boat which was not sunk, but only damaged. The detachment did not aid the little steamboats' because we suspected them of complicity on account of their obstinately cutting into the order of the positions of our vessels. Several of them showed no lights and others only very lute." Ladies' Fleece Lined Ribbed Vests and Pants; pearl buttons, silk trimmed, every garment extremely full, a regular 35c garment for 25c. NIGHT GOWNS UNDEARWEAR The confession was read and the jury retired for fifteen minutes, returning with a verdict of guilty. Judge Vaughn then sentenced Mrs. Krauss to imprisonment for life. One case of Children's heavy cream fleece lined Underwear, both vests and pants, all sizes, from 10c up. The confession pleads that the crime was committed while the defendant was dispossessed of her senses; that she had confessed to her husband, W K. Krauss, that she was prompted to poison her stepdaughter by an indescribable desire to kill, superinduced by' flic notion that Crystal annoyed her father by keeping company with a certain man. After dealing at length with the domestic relations of the family, which the confession says was most pleasant, the confession concludes with an invocation of God's help in supplying strength to bear the sorrow which she endures. She says she will pray unceasingly for forgiveness and asseverates that she loved Crystal and greatly missed her. What the outcome will be probably will be decided at a cabinet meeting. The cabinet has been called together specially to debate the crisis, and it is understood thut a definite stand will be formulated. In some quarters it is felt that the question of war or peace will depend on the meeting. PEOPLE'S STORE, The second dispatch says- PITTST0N, PENN'A. "Having met several hundred fishing boats, the squadron showed them every consideration except when they were in company with foreign torpedo boats, of which one disappeared, while the Other, according to the fishers' own evidence, remained among them until morning. No demand for the punishment of the Russian officers has yet been made, although the step seems to be contemplated. The expected refusal of Russia to palliate their attack on the Hull trawlers Is the basis for the 1:iIk of war. Likelihood of war was increased by the developments today, and already the admiralty has practically enveloped the Ruusinn squadron by a powerful combination of lighting ships of all kinds. The home licet, which sailed from Cromarty. Scotland, on Sunday night, is now reported to be awaiting orders near Dover, so that the only means of escape —that of retreat—will be cut off from the Russians. Continental brand of corn Ovsters opened daily at Messick's 1904 A surprising incident is the report from Copenhagen that Danish worships had kept wateli on Japanese ships for several days previous to the passage of the Russian squadron through Danish waters. It was emphatically said that the Danish government had knowledge that Japanese agents chartered ships in Hull for an attack on the Baltic fleet and that this attack was prevented by the vigilance of a Dutch cruiser and torpedo boat. This dispatch from Copenhagen came as a climax to the sensational news that two torpedo boats had been seen by the crews of the trawlers just before the Russians opened fire, thereby bearing out somewhat the report of Vice Admiral Hoj est veil sky. There is much speculation here over the outcome of these statements, and in some circles there is an inclination to believe that the Japanese actually planned to attack the Russians under the shelter of the fishing fleet.
