Is extending, and It is expected that If th'e present situation Is continued, very long one trade after another will be forced Into idleness, and many thousands of men will be affected. It Is estimated that there are 20,000 idle now, the acquisition of the ironworkers making up that total, with the 15,000 lu borers and bricklayers who are on Btrike. V Practically all the big building contracts in the city are badly crippled and In many instances completely tied up. If a declaration of the "open shop" policy on the part of the employers follows the present strike, In violation of the employers' arbitration plan, as many employers It is likely to do, another tleup of the building trades more serious in Its consequences than that of last sumnief will be the result. The laborers demand absolute recognition of their union, an eight hour day and double pay for overtime. A lockout affecting 10,000 lithographers in the United States and 2,800 In New York alone will probably be declared before the end of the week. There are seventy employing firms of lithographers in New York, and they are organized, as are their men. The spilt here, as in the building trades trouble. Is over th« arbitration question.
