Delaney, chief of police of Denver, who came to Springfield last Wednesduy, has mysteriously disappeared, and tbe Springfield police have been unable to find nny trace of his whereabout. Miss Mayme Delaney, daughter of the Denver chief, came here with him and is still at the Leland hotel, where she and lier father had rooms. Chief Delaney soon after his arrival here sent to a livery stable for a horse and buggy and by, mistake drove away the wrong rig from the hotel and soon afterward was arrested for horse stealing. After the mistake was explained Delaney returned to the hotel, but soon afterward disappeared, and that Is the last seen of him around the hotel. Bar Harbor, Me., Aug. 15.—The battle ship Massachusetts, which sustained serious damage by contact with the pinnacle of Egg rock in this harbor on Wednesday last, has fifteen holes in her bottom, and a part of her rudder is gone. Immense quantities of ammunition, coal and other stores have been removed from the ship. Officials at the department are unable to say how long the Massachusetts must remain at Bar Harbor. Last night, while cleaning his revolver, Patrick McFadden, night watchman at the Phoenix breaker, In Duryea, accidentally fired a shot through his hand. His revolver, which was of 38 calibre and a five-shooter, had become rusted, and, thinking it was empty, he started to clean it with kerosene. After he had cleaned it. In order to see that it worked all righ1. he started to pull the trigger and a bullet which was in the fifth chamber struck him in the hand, piercing It. Delaney, chief of police of Denver, who came to Springfield last Wednesduy, has mysteriously disappeared, and tbe Springfield police have been unable to find nny trace of his whereabout. Miss Mayme Delaney, daughter of the Denver chief, came here with him and is still at the Leland hotel, where she and lier father had rooms. Chief Delaney soon after his arrival here sent to a livery stable for a horse and buggy and by, mistake drove away the wrong rig from the hotel and soon afterward was arrested for horse stealing. After the mistake was explained Delaney returned to the hotel, but soon afterward disappeared, and that Is the last seen of him around the hotel.
