Will be Continued at Hughestown Park Tomorrow. The Most Up-to-date Cowes, Isle of Wight, Aug. 3.—The annual regatta ot the Royal Yacht Club began here today, to be continued throughout the week. The weather is perfect for racing. In the schooner class, which was first sent away, Emperor William's yacht, the Meteor, won the prize, valued at 110 guineas. There was a fair-sized attendance on the picnic of the Brothers' base ball team, which was held on the new ball grounds, In Hughestown, on Saturday afternoon and evening. It was unfortunate that the advertised base ball game did not take place. The Avoca team failed to put in an appearance, and It was no fault of the picnic managers that the game did not take place. It has been decided to continue the picnic tomorrow afternoon and evening, at which time the Leek Cornet band will furnish music and there will be a base ball game between the VVilkesbarre Amateurs and the Lur zerne Reds, teams that are struggling for the championship. Last Saturday they played at Kingston, and although 16 innings were played, it was impossible to break the tie of 2-2. Rome, Aug. 3.—The cardinals who are in conclave for the purpose of electing a successor to Pope Leo. took the fifth ballot this morning with no result. We earnestly hope that the authorities of the civilized nations will give a timely warning to this government, which seems to '-e preparing a Jsastile for the true lovers of China. It would be discouraging to progressive Chinese if the seven reformers under arrest at Shanghai should be turned over to the Chinese government and beheaded. Their writings are of course offensive and seditious, yet they would be punished as though they had spoken in a like manner against the American or British governments, which exist for the welfare of the people. But the government of this land has become so currtipt and has proved such a curse to the people that reformers deserve the sympathies of all enlightened men who can perceive in what it miserable state these men are kept. Is there any hope for China except in revolution or rebellion ? The squadron of attack Is nnder'the command of Hear Admiral Sands. He has under bis command the battle ships Indiana, Massachusetts and Texas and three torpedo boat destroyers. The enemy will be given a start until Wednesday noon.
