The beauty and charm of Sewickley Village will be enhanced by the presence of some of the region’s finest artists on Saturday, Sept. 21, at the Sewickley Celebrates the Arts Festival. The festival, now in it’s ninth year, continues to expand. But bigger can also mean better! “Although our festival has grown in size and popularity in the past few years, we have strived to retain the friendly village atmosphere, which was such an important part of the small community festivals of the past,” stated Jean Horstman, executive director of Sweetwater Art Center, sponsor of the festival. “The festival drew more than 12,000 persons last year, yet there was plenty of room for visitors to move around the area in comfort,” added Ms. Horstman. “Our festival is popular because we assemble quality artists and entertainers, and then we take measures to assure they are presented in such a way that people can enjoy them without feeling crowded. This year’s festival will showcase more than 100 artists whose work comprises a variety of media. There will be stage entertainment all day with jazz, traditional folk, bluegrass, and classical groups. The children’s area will be filled with clowns, mimes, jesters, storytellers, and many hands-on activities for children to enjoy. A wide array of concessions ranging from traditional to exotic fare wifi be offered throughout the day. The' faculty from Sweetwater will be a part of the limelight, too. At 10:30 a.m., Bettie Walberg will demonstrate basketry followed by Ruth Pealer Hess at 11:30 with a watercolor demonstration. Duane Reeves shows flower arranging at 12:30; Louisa Yee, Chinese brush painting at 1:30; Susan Powell, spinning, at 2:30; and Judith Reilly, rug braiding, at 3:30 p.m. “The festival is the last chance of the summer season for people to stroll through a lovely village and enjoy the finest arts and entertainment that the region has to offer,” stated Mrs. Horstman. As in past years, the festival will be held on Broad Street.
