ti Pear no man, and do justice to all men. »» Vol. IV SEWICKLEY, PA., SATURDAY, OCTOBER 20, 1906 No. 8 i . i '■il' *< \ Progressing Well. Will be Ready for the Roof in a Few Weeks. DESIGN FOR HOSPITAL FLAG. Work on the Sewickley Hospital is progressing well, and if the weather is not bad, the roof will be on in about six weeks. The contractors, which, are the Nicola Lumber Gompany, of Pittsburg, have twenty able men, bricklayers, masons and carpenters, at work, in charge of foreman Robert Boggs. The stone work rises solidly and symmetrically from the hillside, among the large trees, which will not be laid low. Secure upon the stone the red brick walls are now about ten feet high and reveal the graceful proportions of the new building. A couple of hundred feet beyond the fine old Watson spring house, the eye of the passer-by can note the rising walls of what will be the most interesting structure in this valley. Connections of water and gas supply pipes are now being made with the main line on Blackburn avenue, The central building is 50x48 feet and two storied. Each wing is 86 feet 8 inches by 153 feet. A slate roof will defy rains, and hard, solid shale supports the foundations. A substantial retaining wall of stone protects the building at the rear, and the Bishop Construction Gompany is making good roadways to and around the structure. If there is no serious delay in the coming1 of material, five months Will find the building ready for interior finish. The summer of . (Continued on page 3.) K. of P. Union Meeting. Invitations have been issued by Superiorior Lodge No. 366, K. of P„ of Allegheny, for the first quarterly union meeting, which will be held on Saturday evening, October 27th, at Schuerd's hall. This will be a fine meeting. A number of the Grand Lodge officers will be present and there will be good speeches, music and a banquet. It is understood that there will be quite a number of the members of Sewickley Lodge No. 426 attend, and it is desirous to have as many attend as possible. Made Vice President. Mr. Frank G. Paulson, of Frederick avenue, returned to his home on Tuesday evening, from New York, where he had been attending the annual convention of the Knox Hat Gompany. He was honored by being elected vice president of that body for the coming year. Struck in the Eye. While playing in the school yard recently, Master Morris Ghapman, son of H. L. Ghapman, of Nevin avenue, was struck in the eye by a colored boy and a painful wound inflicted. The blow smashed the glasses the little chap was wearing and apiece of glass had to be removed from the eye, Hit with a Stone. Master Francis Luty, of Quaker Valley, while on his way to school last Wednesday morning, on the rear of a wagon hauling small stones, was struck in the head by the colored driver with a stone, and had to be taken home to have the wound dressed,- as it bled very profusely and was thought at first to be a much more serious wound than it really was. Fixing the Keystone. The keystone over one of the windows in the First National Bank building, which had sunk is being raised, and the damaged wall will soon be repaired. Important Matters Werejiscussed At Meeting of Sewickley Valley Business Men's Association Held on Tuesday Evening. POSTOFFICE SITE COMMITTEE MAKES A GOOD REPORT. President W. G. -Murray presided at the regular meeting of 'the Sewickley Valley Business Men's Association held oh Tuesday evening, and after the roll-call and reading of the minutes by Secretary Quinn, the real business began. The various committee reports were read and Mr. Diehl, who represented the Givic committee and the Association in the matter relative to having Mr. Warren Manning, the noted landscape artist and engineer come to Sewickley, gave a brief account of the trip over the town and of the meeting held in the Y. M. G. A. building last Saturday evening, and a warrant was ordered drawn in favor of the committee in charge to help defray expenses. The committee in charge of the postoffice site made a report as to what had been accomplished and' arrangements were made to meet the officials and have proper conveyances on hand to take them on a tour of inspection, The burgess and borough council were also invited to participate in the reception. A change in the plans, whereby the officials who were in Pittsburg were called suddenly to New York, necessitated the postponing of the Sewickley inspection until a future date not yet decided upon. Several other matters were brought up for consideration under the Givic committee, the one being a request to have Booker T. Washington come here to lecture for the benefit of the A. M. E. Zion congregation. The officers of the church asked to have the business men endorse this movement, as they wanted to raise, money to improve their property. A motion to have a committee appointed to look into the matter was lost. The civic committee of the Woman's Glub, through its street committee, sent in a request relative to the displaying of goods in front of stores where the same are exposed to germ-laden dust, etc., also about the obstructing of sidewalks, asking that the practice be, abolished. This matter called forth considerable discussion and will be disposed of at the next meeting, when a further report will be made. The committee in charge of the° reception to be held November 20 will report through its sub-committees to the Association at the next meeting. FUSION MEETING. Some Good speakers Will Be On Hand. Gray's Hall Should Be Crowded. On Thursday evening next, October 25; at 8 o'clock, in Gray's hall, there will be a Fusion Mass Meeting, at which time there will be some good speakers. Among them will be Mr. W. H. S. Thomson, candidate for District Attorney;' Dr. W. D. O'Brien, candidate for Sheriff; Mr. F. S. Robinson, T. Mercer Morton, Esq., Herman L. Hegner and others. The Fusion candidate for District Attorney, Mr. Thomson, is a clean cut conscientious attorney, who has the endorsement of practically the whole of the Allegheny Gounty Bar, and is a man .that can be depended upon. He is not bound by any ring ties, and if he is elected will make reforms in the District Attorney's office that will be a credit to him and a lasting benefit to attorneys and the citizens of Allegheny Gounty. He is deserving of your support. Gome out next Thursday and hear him speak. 'X-*-
