TIIUBSDAY, DECEMBER 22, 1949 Price Ten Cents Community Carol Sing Saturday .evening, 7:30 p. m., the Carol Sing will be held at tire Broad Street-Thorn Street Corner in front of the Methodist Church. Mr. W. F. Holthaus will again lead the singing this year. The Carol Sing will be transmitted over tire Chime Tower system so that many shut-ins will be able to hear it this year, Be on time. It will close at eight o’clock. Trumpeters will announce the opening of the “Sing” this year. Christmas Eve Carol Service St. Stephens Communion Service The Traditional Midnight Christmas Eve Carol and Communion Service will be held this year at St. Stephens Church with special pageantry and music. The Service begins at 11 p. m. Preceding the Service proper there will be Christinas carols played on the Tower Bells, followed by organ music played by Julian Williams. The Procession will be led this year by St. Stephen’s new Boy Choir. Carols will be sung by the Choir and Congregation. St. Stephen’s Senior Choir will sing a group of carols, including the following: Every Year at Christmas - Rinck Stars Lead Us Ever On Tribal Carol of the Sioux Sleep, Holy Babe - - Candlyn To Shepherds Fast Asleep - Davis Go Tell It On the Mountains Negro Spiritual The Offertory Anthem will be Pergo-lesis ‘Glory to God”. The new addition, which will increase the overall size of the school by nearly 50%, will have three floors. It will in- clude a modern science room and laboratory, a library, a new music room, a large new kindergarten, special faculty rooms, and expanded cafeteria, study, and classroom facilities. I Plans for the new addition were begun nearly a year ago when a special fund-raising drive was held. Since that time, details have been completely worked out with the architects, Ingham, Boyd, and Pratt of Pittsburgh, and with the building contractor, Rust Engineering Company. More than 250 individual contributions were received into the new ^building fund. Edward M. Clarke, Headmaster of the school, said, “This is a much-needed expansion, for our enrollment has increased from 142 students in 1946 to 235 at the present time. When the new addition is completed in the fall of 1950, the Sewickley Academy will have the finest physical plant of any independent school of its type in Western Pennsylvania.” Frank E. Richardson, Jr., Chairman of the Board of Trustees, acted as head of the building fund campaign and John C. Oliver, Jr., is chairman of the Building Committee. Hawes The cast of “Strange Bedfellows” includes J. English Smith, Alma Lind, Joseph Ruskin, Gloria Abdou, John Johns, Mariam Lewis, Florence Sando, Livonia Stevenson, Pearl I-Iipps, Tom Maxwell, William Leech and John Kozek. In addition to those Playhouse veterans, newcomers in the comedy are Mimi Schneider, Hannah Wolfson, Barry ZeVan, Mitzi Steiner, Kitty Muldoon and Sally McKinley, The lusty comedy is set in San Francisco’s Nob Hill in the year 1896 and deals with the problems of Women’s Suffrage. It was the Inugh-getter of the season in New York City. As Brooks Atkinson of the New York Times said, "Mr. and Mrs. Clements have artfully put together popular comedy about a family that’s split straight down the middle on the political question of votes for women. , . . The audience laughed uproariously.” The Playhouse is a school of the theatre, of which Mrs. Justin B. Lees and Robert Sehmertz are members of the executive board. Richard S. Rauh is president} Errett M. Grahlc, Mrs. 1L J, Heinz, II, Malilon E. Lewis and II. S. Overholt are vice-presidents; Mrs. Royal Daniel, Jr., is secretary, Mrs. George D. Lockhart, assistant secretary; Joseph W. Oliver,, treasurer; Mrs, A. W. Schmidt assistant secretary and Paul G. Benedum, treasurer of the building fund. The players are not quite professionals yet, but are much better than the average amateur. Zoning Ordinance Now Protects Borough of Edgeworth Populace Okie Property Remains In Residence Area With the third and ffnal reading, the new Zoning Ordinance, No. 257, of the Borough of Edgeworth, was placed on the ordinance books, at the Monday night meeting of Council, December 19th, The Ordinance passed by six affirmative votes, the only councilman not present to vote on the issue being Mr. Morrow, There were no borough citizens present at this special hearing meeting. The ordinance was pnssed with the provision that Mr. Okie’s property next to the Sewickley Academy remain in the R-l residence district. At last week’s meeting a motion was passed to include his land in the apartment area, but this was rescinded by advice of legal counsel, Solicitor John Emery. Mr. Bailey then requested council for permission to have an engineering survey for a sewage disposal iff ant, either in conjunction with another borough or strictly an Edgeworth plant. Council agreed that anything necessary to untangle the sewage disposal question should be made as the state is pressing the boroughs for definite action. Solicitor Emery reminded council in closing that they would be adjourning to January 10th at which time the council performs its annual reorganization, It is also the regular monthly meeting in addition to the reorganization proceedings. Community Calendar Friday, December 23 7 p. m. Junior High group carol sing. To meet at Presbyterian Church. Receiving Pilot Training Official USAF Photo,Waco, Texas Aviation Cadet Anthony A. Guido Aviation Cadet Anthony A. Guido, formerly of 329 Broad Street, Sewickley, is receiving poilot training at the Waco Air Force Base, at Waco, Texas, according to word received recently by Sgt. Lewis of the Ambridge Recruiting Station. Mr. Guido graduated from New Castle High School, but vv'as residing here previous to his acceptance as an aviation cadet. Many of his friends at the Greater Pittsburgh Airport will remember this fellow worker, who was an Air Corps Veteran, seeing service in the Pacific during World War II. He is at present undergoing pilot training and upon completion of his training course will be transferred to advanced training, where lie will fiy either an F-80, “Shooting Star” or the B-25, “Billy Mitchell.” Upon graduation, lie will be commissioned a Second Lieutenant and receive the wings of a Pilot in the United States Air Force. Sgt. Lewis invites anyone who is interested in such a career to see him at the U. S. Army and U. S. Air Force Recruiting Station located qn the second floor of the Ambridge borough building.
