"""■mil One of the prettiest bits of gardening work seen th'~ summer was the petunia bed on the estate of Mrs. W. P. Snyder, on Sewickley Heights. v A. E. Bonsey, manager of the estate, estimated the number of plants at six thousand, in a bed 315 feet Jong by 18 feet wide, on the sloping bank of a terrace. The setting for the flower bed is perfect, the dark evergreens and the house form a good background while in front the green lawn slopes gently to the road. The lower border is of white hydrangeas, while a stone walk flanks the bed on the upper side. The clusters of white and yellow California poppies, portulaca, and blue star agératum are surrounded by floods of colorful pink, white and blue petunias, contrasting strongly with the restful green of the background. The whole makes a mass of color which has attracted great admiration by all who have seen it. A GUERNSEY SHOW Many Fine Entries for Cattle Clul> Exhibit Next Week The second annual show Of the Sewickley Guernsey Cattle Club will take place at the show •ground of the Allegheny Country Club next Thursday, an event of great interest to many people hero and at a distance. A representative of tho American Guernsey Cattlo Club, with which tho local association is affiliated, will bo present. This promises to bo tho best as well as the largest Gucrnsoy show over hold in Pennsylvania; there will 'bo sixty animals shown in the seventeen classes, from a dozen herds, the best in Western Pennsylvania, which is tho homo of some of tho best Guernseys in tho country as Shown by tho milk and buttor fat records. The judging will bo done front 9:30 to d:00, by Prof. Anthony of the University of West Virginia, at Morgantown and tlie judging team of students coached by him for the coming national Guernsey show at Memphis. The following herds will be represented: Pair- ^ acres, B. P. Jones, Jr.; Parmliill Dairy, Mrs. Henry It. Rea; Pollifoot Farm, William B. Schiller; J. P. Byers; Franklin Farm, Mrs. Alexander Laughlin, Jr.; Wilpon Hall, Mrs. William P. Snyder; all these of Sew|icklcy HJeilgihts; and Boechwood Farm, Ralph B. Plinn, Sharpsburg; Bosemount, Howard Heinz, Sharpsbtirg; John W. Lawrence, Sharps* burg; and Rosolia, Farm, D. P. Crawford, Coraopolis Heights. The picture shows "Imp. Betty of HoJiOUe du Pommier,” one of tho finest animals to be shown by tho Parmliill Dairy.
