Grubbs, who was attached to the aviation service during the World War. The letters on the sign are fifteen feet high and nine feet wide and just above the letters can be seen the huge circle with an arrow pointed north. Many favorable comments have been heard from airmen on the usefulness and visibility of the sign; the photographer who Was up to take an aerial survey of Sewickley for the borough being particularly pleased, as he said all these towns along the river look very much alike from the air. The sign is visible on the borough's air picture even though it had had only one coat of paint at that time. As soon as the Post sends in a photograph and description of the sign to the Guggenheim Fund for the Promotion of Aviation, they will receive a certificate signed by Col. Charles A. Lindbergh and Sewickley will be placed on the aviation maps. The idea of painting a sign was brought up by Major jack Shindelbower in 19,24 but no action was taken on the motion until the Legion Was' occupying their new home when an appropriation was made to cover the cost of the paint. The High School roof, the roof of the new platforms along the railroad, the railroad road bed, and the superstructure of the bridge were all considered along with the different types of signs necessary in the different locations but finally Mr. Shindelbower and his committee, consisting of Harold Grubbs, Casey Jones and James Hingst, decided "6n the roof of the Bower Auto Co.'s garage and readily secured W. C. Bower's permission. Casey Jones laid out the type, size and spacing of the letters, Jack Shindelbower shellacked the roof, to prevent discoloration of the paint and assisted by his committee, applied the first coat of white paint. Borem's hardware furnished the paint at cost and probably will furnish the paint for the quarterly painting which will be necessary to keep the sign in good condition. Mr. Pressly Craig, president of W. C. Bower Company, Inc. was in favor of the sign even before he took over the garage and is greatly pleaed to be able to aid the Legion ih their effort to help the airmen. The picture shown above Was taken by Harold Grubbs from the Methodist Church toWer and not only shows the sign very Well but gives a good view of the new hospital building and a portion of Broad street.
