Council plans to make public its budget for 1991 in two weeks time, but any plans in that direction necessarily must take into consideration the borough’s new- garbage contract, an item council has not yet obtained. At this month’s regular meeting, by a vote of seven to one, : members rejected all three bids received in September for. a new garbage contract and, by the same . margin, opted to invite new bids. Councilmen Childs, Brandt, George, Lyons, McMaster, Sacco and Scalercio all agreed to take the new direction, while Councilman Pete Schlicht was the only dissenter. Council scheduled a meeting for Monday, Dec. 3, to open and decide on the expected new bids. Their decision , will then play a large role in framing the new budget a week later (Dec. 11). • The September bids were rejected due to a sharp increase in contract costs that forced council to take austerity measures. Those .^measures are receiving opposition from a number of community leaders. Their source of pride is backyard garbage pickup, a service enjoyed by only three municipalities in Allegheny County. Local church tour set for Saturday On Saturday, Dec. l, local churches will share historical pasts when doors are open for a community-wideopen house 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The open house is one of the events of Sewickley’s Ses-quicentennial Celebration. *‘We hope that a lot of people in town take the opportunity to see the churches,” said committee chairman Kathleen Pearson. Participating churches will be St. Paul’s Lutheran; St. Andrew’s Presbyterian; Antioch Baptist; The Presbyterian Church, Sewickley; Serbian Orthodox Diocese, Edgeworth; Sewickley Bap-list; First Church of Christ Scientist; St. Matthews AME Zion; Triump Baptist; St. Stephen’s Episcopal; St. James Catholic; Sewickley United Methodist; and Grace Orthodox Presbyterian. St. Stephen’s Episcopal will offer a conducted tour by the Rev. Mike Henning at 11 a.m, Many pf the churches will offer a printed program of the church history. Thumbnail sketches of the churches are available in the official Sewickley Ses-quicentennial handbook, now on sale in the village. Sasqui souvenir book still on sals In village The Sewickley fS&quicenten-mal Handbook, a celebration .of 150 years of Sewickley, is on sale for $10 at a number of Sewickley locales. The book includes historical pictures of Sewickley and an array of articles featuring little-told tales of Sewickley. The book, edited by Eliza Nevin, can be bought at the following Sewickley locations; Penguin Bookstore, Sewickley Borough Office, Sewickley Graphics and Design, Diet Center, Sewickley Valley Hospital Wishing Well. Gift Shop, The Second Store Gift Store (above Sewickley Fish and Poultry), and ..The Corner Bookstore, across from Prudential Realty. Sewickley Sesquicentennial Handbook can also be mail-ordered for $15 by writing 150 Handbook Fund, 620 Cochran St., Sewickley, Pa. 15143. Village post office sets holiday hours The Sewickley Post Office is expanding its window operation for the holiday season. Hours are effective Monday, Dec. 3. The holiday hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 ■p.m. Saturday hours remain unchanged — 8:30 a.m, to noon.
