Duquesne Light plans to expand Sewickley substation CHADWICK StB,|gT] By Bobby Cherry STAFF WRITER Duquesne Light officials plan to expand the Sewickley substation later this year as part of a regional $500 million infrastructure improvements project. ■ “The improvements to the Sewickley substation will provide greater electricity capacity to the Sewickley area,” said company spokesman Joseph Vallarian, “When a lot of these facilities were built, the service areas weren't as built-up as they are now. Duquesne Light is looking to future growth as the company improves older substations.” Duquesne Light plans to add two 138-kilovolt transformers and replace most of the remaining substation with newer and more efficient equipment. Work is expected to begin later this year and be completed sometime in 2009, Vallarian said. Powqr company officials also plan a green approach to the project. Duquesne Light will install wiring that uses “environmentally friendly oils and materials,” and recycle older equipment made of copper. In August, Duquesne Light purchased the property at 251 Chadwick St. for $1 from SOHO -Real Estate, LLC. The real estate company had purchased the site for $210,000 On July 30. Following a public hearing that was scheduled for yester-' day at 251 Chadwick St., Duquesne Light officials will present their plan to Sewickley Borough for the site, said Kevin Flannery, borough manager. The meeting occurred after the Herald's deadline. Ohio River Boulevard resident Mark Schaefer doesn't like knowing the substation behind his house is growing. Continued on Page 2 647397534406
