Senior gals create ’50s fashions By Kristina Kregiel_ Staff wrifer Students at Quaker Valley High School have worked hard for residents of the Leetsdale Senior Citizen High-Rise over the years, seeking grants for computers, providing entertainment and offering companionship to those in need of a friend. So when Mary McCoy, a resident at the high-rise, was asked to help sew costumes for Quaker Valley’s spring musical, she didn’t hesitate. McCoy, a former seamstress and owner of a small business in Sewickley, donated her time and sewing skills to create poodle skirts for Continued on Page 4 LEETSDALE Ceremony marks start of project By Kristina Kregiel Siaff writer A dream — one that has been more than 15 years in the making — finally came true for Leetsdale residents, officials and those who have dedicated years of time and effort into a project that would enable better safety in the community. Last Thursday afternoon, a groundbreaking ceremony was held at the corner of Ferry Street and Avenue A for the Michele "Mike" Maruca Memorial Overpass. Maruca, who was instrumental in malting dreams for the overpass a reality, died Dec. 13,2005, in a car accident on Ohio River Boulevard. He was a Leetsdale resident for 30 years and served on borough council and as mayor. The ceremony opened with a DVD presentation showing news segments about the project, featuring Wayne Van Dine, a now retired KDKA-TV reporter, who followed the story from the beginning. The video closed with a moving dedication to Maruca as his images were displayed on screen and set to the tune of Frank Sinatra's "My Way." Gov. Ed Rendell and Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato were among those who attended and spoke at the ceremony. Onorato said, with the construction of the new overpass and roadways, comes new opportunities. "We're focusing on areas where there is real job potential," he said, Continued on Page 3
