January H Longtime Osborne Borough secretary Mary Lou ' Sullivan stepped down from the position she held for 17 years. . Mary Lou Sullivan ■ ICiwanis Club of Sewickley turned its attention toward seniors with the formation of Sewickley Golden K Kiwanis Club. .H Sweetwater Center for the Arts put the finishing touches on its expanded facilities. ■ Les Powner and Joe JubihSki, longtime members of Fair Oaks Volunteer Fire Department’s board of directors, stepped down. The pair had served for a combined 50-plus years. ■ Malachy Whalen stepped down as president of Sewickley Borough Council, R S. Phil Hundley is appointed by Sewickley Heights Borough Council to fill the seat vacated by Georgia Mosier, H Dr. R. Gerard Longo, superintended of Quaker QUAKER VALLEY School District got a new look, but work ran into a few snags along the way. Valley School District, was named Pennsylvania's Superintended of the Year. H Gene Klein, Quaker Valjey boys' soccer coach, was named National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Umbro National Coach of the Year, H Zedric Coaston came aboard as new pastor of St. Matthews AME Zion Church, B Jonathan Showe is appointed as the new president of Sewickley Borough Council. ■ Matthew and Michael Nester, twin brothers from Fair Oaks, earned Eagle Scout awards. February ■ Sewickley Academy’s boys’ basketball team upset undefeated Aliquippa 71-58. R Roy Lilly Jr,, who served as president of Quaker Valley Democratic Organization for 10 years, announced he was leaving that position. R Quaker Valley and Sewickley Academy joined in a joint celebration of black churches during Biack History Month. The calendar of events included music and an art show, R The Quaker Valley boys’ basketball team clinched die section championship with a win over Vincentian. It was the Quakers’ first section title since 1989. ' R'Donald Spalding,iCindy t Giles and Flossie Hayes Manning were named Sewickley Herald’s Man, Woman and Citizen of the Year. R Residents of Bell Acres • voiced their opposition to a proposed sewage plant that would be build in neighboring Economy Borough. R Ken Johns, mayor of Sewickley, offered a formal apology for a racial remark .he made to a female member of the Quaker Valley track and field team. The remark sparked attention from local and national media. R Maleet Gordon was hired as the new secretary of Osborne Borough. March R The Quaker Valley boys’ basketball team captured the WPIAL Class AA championship with a 57-49 win over New Brighton at Duquesne University's A.J. Palumbo Center. Justin Shegog and Andy VVormsley each finished with 15 points to bring QV its first-ever title. Sewickley Academy’s boys, meanwhile, lost the Class A final to Clairton, The game was significant, though, as Clairton head coach Carol Gelet became the first woman to take a boys’ basketball team to the WPIAL title, ——Continued on Puge 2
