For more on t(i«9 historic event, see page 16 of this i^sue. i (photo by Qedrge Gaadt) Violent storm crashes through area on Thursday By Eve Moore and Mike May Last Thursday, Sept, 17, at approximately 3 p.m., severe thunderstorms hit, the Sewickley and outlying areas, causirig aiarm and damage. Winds reported at 50 to S5 mph by the KDKA Weather Service,’ overturned trees, downed pmverlines and literally made quite a mess of things. No injuries wer6 reported in any of the area townships; however, damage was extensive. D.T, Watson Hospital in Leet Township Was d^tistated enough to cancel its polo match, which would have been held on Sunday. (The games have be^n re-scheduled for this Sunday, Sept. 27.) “Edgeworth had trees down all over;” said Harvey H. Lciuderbaugh, chief of the Edgeworth Volunteer Fire Department. “We had roads blockaded due to downefi *hot| wires that had about 100 volts of electricity going through them. They were burning the roads So we had to close them.” Church Lane, Leet Road, Oliver Road,' Woodland Road, Edgeworth and Pine, and Edgeworth and Maple, were some of the roads blockade in an effort krap ' residents out or the danger zones. the Edgeworth poHce,- aided by the ’ fire department, and the Edgeworth , maintenance men—a total of 10 men — cooperated to get the wires under cbn^ troL They were relieved after 9 p.m., at which time Duquense -Light maintenance people came to repair damages. Electrical power was out in several areas for 24 hours ot more. “We were - fortunate” in not having any fires to report, said Edgeworth's Borough' Manager Douglas C. Arndt. Sdme residents reported a definite trail of snapped trees and twisted brush. A tvi^stef or funnel cloud of some sort must have been present to create such damage, they reported. The Herald's oWn B.G.
