Resolution passed fixing the pay of Street Commissioner at I2.2S per day In lieu of 92.00 per day. WEBER The regular monthly meeting of the Council of Greater Puazsutawney was held In the Council chamber of Municipal Hall last night. Attending were O. P. Walker, president, John Doran, William Young, D. A. Claw son, Charles N. Miller, Irwin Simpson Alex. Williams, O. W. Thomas, Harry Heckcndorn, Dr. O. R. Bell, T. W. Shearer. Alex. Q. Hynde, 3. C- Smith, Calvin Bley and T. C- Redding, T. B. Hastings secretary, and W. M. Gillespie, solicitor and several citizens.The council chamber, whose walls formerly resounded with the noise of cracking Jokes, in lieu of municipal affairs, last night bulged with councilmen and laymen. It became apparent at once that Greater Punxsutawney needs a greater council chamber. , Henry, Collector 1,492 31 Treasurer for licences. . . . 900 00 There is due from poll tax 200 00 There is due from A. Mc- In the Borough Cash we had on March 1, a balance on hand of $ 630 59 There is due from the County 1 desire to call your attention to the present conditon of the Borough finances, especially to the Borough Cash and Street Funds. We had a balance in the Street Fund on March 1st of $95.49. This loaves the Street Fund unprovided for until such time as you make an appropriation for same. Gentlemen Treasurer H. H /' McHenry reported for the month fit March as follows: To the Honorable 'l'own Conucil: Secretary Hastings called attention to the fact that from similar sources the Burgess of DuBois had reported but about $500 for the year. Burgess Brown reported for the month of March collections amounting to $146; disbursements, $40.44; balance, $99.56. The Burgess also submitted an annual statement including lines, licenses and permits. The amounts for each month of the year follows: March, 1906, $8.50; April, $ 1 56,75; May, $125 75; June, $149.10; July. $122.75; August, $101.45; September, $152; October, $136; November, $113; December. $62.50; January, 1907, $82.50; February, $103.50; total, $1,387.80. B. M. Clark, attorney for the Mahoning Valley Street Railway Company, asked for franchises for Ridge Avenue and Graffius Avenue. Granted. L. I. Zimmerman petitioned for authority to change course and grado of Beyer Avenue and Park Avenue crossing, made necessary on account of encroachment, of retaining walls. Referred to Street Committee. Under the head of hearing petitions, M. H. Smith asked for a grade for a jsldewalk on Front Street, fronting lip proposed new blacksmith shop, as well as sewerage privileges for J. S. Barry, who is erecting a business block, corner of East Mahoning Street and Front Street. Referred to Street Committee. Police were notified to hand in monthly reports to" the chief. The borough Dads got down to work promptly at eight o'clock and kept at It, hHmmer and tongs, until almost 12 o'clock midnight, with President Walker manipulating the gavel. The Light Fund shows a balance of cash on hand of $1.36. There is due from A. Klock Collector $163 31 There is due from II. H. In a drunken brawl at Valler last night George Marjot, an Italian llv- Itig at that place, was stabbed, in such a manner as will likely cause his death. The foreigner who committed the deed, Mike Zubick, is now In the local jail- Zublick and Marjot, with several of their friends, had been drinking rather heavily and differed on some point or other, the difference being so great that a, free-for-all fight started and In the mixup Zubick drew a knife and stabbed Marjot in the back, the blade penetrating to the hilt and entering the kidneys. A call was sent to the barracks at eleven o'clock and Sergeant Ward, together with five privates were dispatched immediately to the scene of the affray. Tlie squad arrived at Valler about 11:30 o'clock and spent some time in hunting for their man. He Avas linally located in a boarding house %.nd when the policemen entered ho ran to the upper story, threw open a window and Jumped a distance of about twenty feet to the ground. Quickly recovering himself he started on a dead run, but Private Charles Smith happened to be in his way and quickly nabbed him. The prisoner was then brought to this place, where he was lodged in the lock-up. II is feared that Marjot's injuries will prove fatal. FISH HAVE ARRIVED. Bond* for Treasurer McHenry of In the matter of the petition of certain property owners asking the council to enforce the laws regarding Ea»t Torrence Street, the Council on the advice of the solicitor, advised the petitioner to get out a warrant and go before the Burgees or a Jretloe o( the Peace. In this manner the matter could be brought to the attention of the Court and finally determined. The' Solicitor alao suggested that the matter could be amicably settled by* obtaining a promise from Mr. North not to use his new building for stabling horses. *684 29 All of which will be available for use before June 1. The Water Fund shows a balance on hand sufficient to close up the year. The Sinking Fund shows a balance of cash on hand of $8,974.30. Treasurer-collector James Lockard, of the former borough of Llndsey, reported collections lor the monta amounting to J174.72. The Auditors' report for the year ending March 1, 1907, was read and accepted. Elsworth Jenkins, trustee of the Congregational Church, West End, petitioned council to have the congregation exempted from payment ot expenses of curbing in front of building; frontage forty-five feet. Referred to Street Committee. Solicitor Gillespie was instructed to prepare a petition to Judge Reed to appoint addltonal councilmen for First, Second, Third and Fourth Wards, to bo presented at coming t«rm ot Court of Quarter Sessions. In the matter of the petitioners protesting payment of two-thirds of the cost of curbing on Front Street Council was advised by the Solicitor to pro- Coed to make the necessary Improve* ments and collect as required by law. He suggested that if the complainants were not satifled to stand the curbing expenses they should bo compelled to pave tihder the former arrangement according to the original petition which does not Include Statu aid. SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico.—Governor Wlnthrop Is preparing to make the reception In Puerto Rico of Secretary ot War Taft second only to that extended to President Roosevelt. Mrs. •raft will precede the Secretary to the Island arriving here April 11. A shipment of eighteen cans of trout fry from the State Fish Commission. at Harrlsburg, was received hero Monday. Each can contained about 500 small trout, averaging about an Inch In length. The shipment reached Its destination In first-class shape less than half a dosen of the 10,000 minnows having died cnroute.. The dentsens of aqua pura seemed to enjoy the trip, although the water In each can was covered with broken Ice. The fish received will be distributed among the pure water streams in this section by the following persons: H. R. Llngenfelter, Harfey Rowan, D. M. Croasman, James Elder, Dr. W. F. Beyer, Goorge Crlssman, S. 8. Jordan, Earl Oourley, E. E. Oourley, V. R. Llngenfelter, P. O. Freas, Alfred JFrampton, J. M. Beyer, F. R. Bowman, R. C. Wlnslow, J. H. Evans, Isaac Johns, Jacob Fink and J. M. Means- It will require three year* for this beaaon's stocking to attain thelf growth.
