THE HOT WAVE
The hot wave was broken on Sunday
night hy a violent storm that flooded
the gntetrs and washed out the streets.
The thermometer on Saturday regis-tered
1110 degrees In the shade, break-ing
all heat records.
The thermometer yesterday did not
climb ahov. the HO's in the shade and
to-day's record will about equal that of
yesterday.
The men In the mills have suffered
very much from the heat, making Just
about one hnlf time. Had last weeks'
hot wave lasted Into this week, the
rolling ml..s would hnve been compell-ed
to close down. The men were com-pletely
played out on Saturday.
Workman In the quarries and In
ither plnrcs where they were exposed
lo the rays of the sun were compelled
to stop work in a number of cases, but
onsltlerlng the great heat there were
very few prostrations.
The greatest discomfort was caused
by the heat at nights. Workmen who
were prostrated In the day time could
