When she arrived at tho school house about twenty or thirty pupils were grouped around talking, but a ■pail of silence fell upon theiu as she Walked up and grilled llifii. with :i " good morning " lhat was more like tho chirp of a frightened bird thi I anything else. As she unlocked the door aud enlii-ed what she had already begun to re-gard as a chamber of torture, three or four slowly followed her iuto the rOWE and deposited their books on the whit-tled desks, took leaUaad Qxed Ibeir ejes upon her with a stare that <*f«• not help toatrengtben her nerves. All the rules aud regulations of her "Theory and practlco for opening school on the lirst day " seemed to vanish and leave her drain whirring In dizzy-helplessness. She had finished the examination In all ii« branches except the advanced reading class, which was principally composed of grown girls and young men, among whom was the terrible Jim Turner, of whom she had been warned by 1'iiele Zi-ke. Several of the members of the class had lead, and it was now the turn of Moses Bradley, a huge, heavy-set fel-low, with imall, malicious eyes, aud a general air of rufllatiism. " Mr. Bradley, will you please stand up when you read '.'" asked Alice. "1 kin read Justus well siltin I wn," replied the fellow with a dogged air. " But it Is one of the rules of a raad- Ing class to Bland up to read," said Anee. bei btmrt quaking with fear, as ■he braaw the iaelplent rebellion. "1 reckon you will have to make a new rule for mo, thcu," impudently answered BfOM, glancing sideways with a grin of triumph. "If you do not obey me I shall be obliged to punish you," said Alice, bravely, although she could hardly stand up. At the rearof theaoboi : Jim Turniirengaged In a hand-to-hand aonbat wltb Moso Bradley and his two brothers, both of whom t/ere grown. As Alice stepped around the corner, Jim sent MOM reeling to the earth, and then turned like a lion on his remaining asaailanta. They rush-ed at liiin from Iwb sides, but Jim was tjaaotlveasa panther, and Hill Brad-lay fell us if snot, from a left-hand, d blow, and his brother Tom followed bins in an Instant. Tin ooml ,, quickly that Alie >noe to Interfere, but she fell that it wouldn't do to let this open violation of sobool rules pan un-punished, so she rang the hell. When the pupils wen assembled she culled the OUlprltt up to the d.-k , and asked what i be light was about and who be-gan It. The Bradley boys stood sullen and silent, hut Jim answered: "I would rather not tall What it was about, but I began it by knodklng Mosu Bradley down." Alice knew the fight was the result of Jim's espousal of her cause in the -class, aud her voice faltered " Than I shall have to punish you ; bold out your hand." Jim obeyed herlnatantly. she took up the ruler with a trembling hand pan the punishment. Jim's hanged a niusole. As Alice inflicted the blows on the hand so quietly held out to her, the thought i usbad her mind that she was smlliug nly band that had bean raised to befriend her in all that lawless region. Her Ikes grew deathly pale, her fell falteiingly, tbe tears began to run down her cheeks, the ruler fell fro in der hand, she sank Into her seat, buried her face in her hands, and bust Into a storm of sobs. Then Jim's countenance changed Hi- lip quivered, he dasded his hands across ids eyes to clear them of an un-natural dimness, aud the great lump in Ids throat seemed l/> choke him. A chuckle from Mose Bradley recalled his self-possession and ha took a step Or two loward the latter with eyes that fairly biased with indhnation. Moso rapidly retreated a step or two end a full mi Alice voice : . the play lid. heohlldren heard . after ail, Jim," and Jim'.-, ri | ly, " ■. At one o'clock Alice rang the bell wild a feeliug of .utter despair, but no I ever moved more smoothly than did her school that afternoon.liut Alice had determined to quit tbe old school. .-o when Alice locked tlie selloolhouse door that evening it was with a min-gled feeling of relief aud humiliation that she started to offer her resignation. A- lie left the sohoolhouse she saw Jim Turner, a few yards ahead ol der, walking rapidly loward home- She culled his name aud he Stopped aud re-spectfully waited until she had over-taken him. " Mr. Turner, I am going away in the morning and I wish to thank you for your brave defense of me at school to-day, and to ask your forglveuess for the punishment I so unjustly Inflicted on you," said Alice aud in her earnest ncssAlicc held out her little trciubli ng hand, and Jim instantly grasped it. " I have nothing to forgive,"said de " you could not do otderwise and nel-tder could I. Hut you surely don't In-tend lo xuit the school." " V.s, I would rather lie than pass thi< e mouths of such scenes as I have to-day." " Bui you will have no more trouble for there is 110 one that would give you any trouble, except t; e Bradley boys and I will aud 1 will answer for their good behavior while I'm about." At lust Jim's eloquence prevailed, ami Alice leached the .-chool once . At the end of the term Jim left aud went to college. Alice taught the Beat- Creek school IUI 0" -.-fully for three years, hut in tde end lined /.. ke't i red lotions were ve-rified, for Jim Turner came back and broke up tbe school. He married the teacher. OUT OF THE DEPTHS. it was exceedingly annoying. I be-gan to spit blood most freely, although my lungs were In perfect condition, and I knew it did not come from them. My physicians were careful and untir-ing in their attentions, hut unable to relieve my sufferings. My ueighbors ami friends thought I was dying and many oalltd to see me fully twenty-live on a single Sunday that I now re-call. Al last my agony seemed to culminate iu the moat inteuse sharp pains I have ever known or deard of. If red hot knives sharpened to the bights! degree had been run through my body constantly they could not have hurt me worse. I would spring up In bed. sometimes as much as three fed, cry out in my agony and long for death. Oue nlgdt the misery wss so Intense that I arose and attempted to go Into tlie next room, but was uuable to lift my swollen feet above the little threshold that obstructed them. I fell back upon the bed and gasped In my agony, but felt unable even to breaths. it seemed like death. "Several years ago Kev. Dr. J. E. Kaukin, now of Washington, was sta-tioned here as pastor of the Congrega-tional church. We all admired and i ud dim. and my wilb remi m bored seeing somewhere that he had spoken iu the ntgni it term- of a prep io wblob bad oared some of his Intimate friends. We detlrmlned to try tbla remedy, accordingly seut for it,and to make a long story short, II completely rejlorcd my health, brought me back from tho grave, and I owe all I have in the way of health and strength to Warner's Safe Cure, better known as Warner's Safe Kidney aud Liver Cure. I am positive that If I dad taken this medicine when I felt the first symptons above described, I might have avoided all the agony I af-terward endured, to say nothing of the narrow escape I had from death." Jn order that all possible tacts hear-ing upon tde subject mlgdt ho known, I called upon Dr. Oscar V. Fassett, wdo wns for nineteen years United States Examining Surgeon, aud who attended Mr. Jacques during his sick-ness. He said Mr. Jacques had a most pronounced case of Albuiuinurla or Brighls disease of the kidneys. That an analysis showed the presence of al-bumen aud casts In great abundance and that he was in a condition where few If any ever recover. His recovery was due to Warner's Safe Cure. Mr. John W. Hobart, General Man-ager of the Vermont Central Railroad, staled lhat Mr. Jacques was one of the best aud most faithful of his employes, lhat bis sickness had been an exceed, lngly sev«re oue aud the company were not only glad to again have bis sei vices, but grateful to the remedy that huil cured BO valuable a man. Mr. .lame- M. Fuss, assistant super. intend, lit and master mecdante ol tds V. niionl Ceutral Hailroad, is also able to confirm this. I do not claim to he a great discover-er, hut I do Idink llial I have fouud in tin-above a most remarkable case and knowiug the unusual lucrease of Blights disease feel that the pudlic shouId have the benefit of it. It seems to me a remedy lhat can accomplish so much In the last stages ougdt to do ev-en mere I'm- the llr.l approach of this deceptive yet terridle trouble. F. B.
