Backen-stose, children's Dental Health Week chairman for the Hershey Area for the Harrisburg Dental Society. Problems range from lack of proper home care of teeth to ,ne Of treatment or irregular or "crooked" 'teeth, he explained. Loss than 20 per cent of the chil-dren in this community have never visited a dentist for treatment .or cL) not, make regular xiisits to a dentist for -check-ups. • They make appointments ofily• for emergency treatment. Many children lose one or more permanent, -teeth before they. are 12 years Old. ileeause the picture :throtighout the . nation is.equally, sad, Dr. Back- ' enstose said, on-ce .every. year a special effort is made to focus the country's attention on the serious-ness, of the problem. Dates of this year's National Children's Dental Health Week are February. 7 to 13. Of course, the individual must think about dental health every Week, Dr. Backenstose pointed out. Three 'simple measures faithfully observed Can 'do a great deal to reduee tooth decay:- cutting 'down on sweets, brushing one's teeth after every meal and going to a dentist periodic:My for a ehock-ilp. A fourth way of preventing tooth decay is to fluoridate the commu-nity's public water supply. Studies made in other cities indicate that children drinking fluoridated wa-ter from birth have up to 65 per cent less torah decay, Dr. Backen stoSe said. In rural areas lacking public water supplies, topical ap-plication of fluorides by dentists reduces new decay by as much as 40 per cent. If children's teeth do not have the benefits of fluoridation and of proper care,. what happens? Youngsters with diseased, decay-ed-, broken or crooked teeth can-not Chew their food properly, dur-ing the- years When nutrition is so important, Dr. Backenstose ex-plained. Their speech may be af-fected, and the size and shape of their faces. Diseased or irregular teeth .may cause emotional prob-lems for boys and girls sensitive about their appearance. John Dodge is Scoutmaster, of Troop 85. Following a year's: ' work, the young men were approved by ,the local Examining Committee (Charles Brinser and Pastor, Gulnivan) and the ExamMing Committee 0f the United Churches of Greater Harrisburg. - GETTING THE WORD. Illustrious Patriarch, Kenneth Herr, of the Quarryville Slumbering Lodge of Groundhogs, when he conferred with the furry prognosticator on Tuesday. Earmuffs foretold six additional weeks of winter.
