Title | Letter from Warren Johnston to Bobby [Letter 142] |
Subject | Correspondence; World War, 1939-1945.; World War, 1939-1945--Women. |
Description | #94 Saturday 6 Jan 1945 7:30 am Hi, Sweetie, Last night, just to get out for a change, I went to a movie and took potluck. It was lousy. Still, it's good to get away once in awhile. It's so much pleasanter living here in a tent where I can read or write without fear of interruption. Within a few weeks all tents will be replaced by Quonset huts, less individual and cozy but cleaner. They should be about as cool, and [lighter?]. The tent I'm in now has a plywood floor (plywood is scarce around here - it was bought with 4 bottles of whiskey, worth $15 apiece), built-up sides with mosquito-net screening, the tent flags stretched out to form a sort of awning to protect the screening from rain on all sides. The tent has a few leaks in it by now, as is inevitable. Darling, several men of the 7th Section at Columbia who have been and still may be at Fort Ord live in Carmel with their wives. One if Ross Fink - I'm sure you met him: smoothfaced, silver haired, portly-ish man of 42-46, slight southern drawl and very pleasant. War [H?] and his wife (Boulder July ’43, Columbia in Johnny Kneubuhl's class) live in a hotel in Monterey. Johnny Kneubuhl is at Fort Ord and must live in the vicinity. You can reach him by calling Fort Ord and asking for CASA (Civil Affairs Staging Area). I intend to look up his wife next time I'm in H. - if that ever happens. Latest talk is that 2000 men, mostly of higher rank (Lt Comdrs, Comdrs, Capts.) will be graduated from Princeton, will go directly out on new operations (permanently after Fort Ord); and that will be stuck here a good while. Well, its safe if monotonous. Let's hear any gossip you pick up from the boys. Love you Warren |
